i was wondering, i just put some aquatic plants in it, they are plant's from a friend's pond. i'm not sure what type of plant it is, but it grow's and spread's at a very fast pase. how important is it that you have live plant's in a fresh water tropical community aquarium? the fish that are in there are: 1 sliver dollar, 1 golden gorami, 1 blue gorami, 1 pink kissing fish (or gorami), 1 (male) black molly, 1 red eye tetra,1 barb fish. 1 pelico, 1 up-side down cat fish, 1 chinese- alge eater, and 3 golden mystery snails. it sound's like alot but there is not relly that many fish in there, but there are a few "bottom dewlers" and i was thinking about adding a "black knife ghost fish" and maby a few angle fish,, some neon's and guppy's. and i know i need a female molly for the male one, but i guss you could say that he was a rescue fish, i saved him from wal-mart when they were getting rid of there fish! lol. but adding the plant's is okay, right? and how does the my tank sound? healthy??

I got 2 convicts from my lfs almost a week ago. (m/f) the tank is beside my sofa where i sit and watch tv at night. The thing is they are aways hiding and dont even come out when i put food in, they wait till it floats near the cave run out and grab some and go back again. If they do come out as soon as i move they go back to hiding. Should i move my tank to somewhere i would bother them less. i got them to breed but the way they are acting i doubt this will happen. I have alot plants and hiding places in tank

I have a 20 gallon fish tank that right now has just 3 neon tetras in it as I wait for the tank to finish cycling. Getting to the end stages of that.
When I do my measurements for everything I always seem to have a very low alkalinity...is this important to fix?
I have been paying attention to the ammonia, nitrates, nitrites...but have not done anything about the alkalinity.
From the little bit I have read on the web it seems to be important for coral and such...but I will not have any coral in my tank so should I worry about it?

My male betta is maintaining a huge bubble nest three times his size and it's taking a mountain shape. He flares up a lot when I get near his aquarium as if he wants to attack me.

Do I need to get him a female to calm him down?

I bought a betta fish (siamese fighting fish) yesterday and it was feeding and moving around fine yesterday. Today ít seems it's been floating around the bottom of the tank, hiding between the plant and not swimming to the top for food. I dont think it ate anything today or is moving much. I was keeping it by the window. It's pretty cold in my house and what do you think i should do and where's best to keep it (Possibly places between the kitchen or bathroom)

One died yesterday - a female guppy. Today, this male guppy looks so depressed - it keeps hanging around the top position and barely swim unless I approach him. I'm running out of ideas as to how to take good care of my guppies. Partial water change didn't work....I changed the filter today. Used that vacuunm thing-o and barely suck up the dirt...
I shouldn't have bought them - maybe they would have lived longer and happier...seeing them dieing just makes me so depressed.

One of my guppies is pregant.
Do i need to get one of those additives to the tank to place the female guppy in until she gives birth? I really don't want to have to buy one.

Will they survive?

The other fish in the tank is a male guppy, a neon, and a suckerfish.

I have 2 male guppies in a ten gallon tank. I try to keep the tank as clean as I can, and I change the water weekly. For a while now, they have had tail-rot. I've tried everything I can find, but nothing seems to work. Some of the medicine says it works better with out carbon filters, but I'm worried that if I unplug the filter for a week at a time that my fish will run out of oxygen or have too much waste in the tank and it will harm them. Does anyone know any medicine for tail/fin-rot that can work with a carbon filter? Or am I just being too paranoid about unplugging the filter?

I just posted about my betta fish and buying the shrimp. Now, I am wondering, why he wont eat. When i first purchased him, he was fine. He ate and swam around and was fine. But then two days ago i changed his water and i took him out of the bowl and put him in a little one. I didnt use soap i just rinsed it with warm water. Then i put him back in the bowl. Since then he wont eat like he used to. And he gets really scared and flops around when i walk by the bowl. Whats wrong??????

My girlfriend and I have recently purchased some gold fish. Well quite often we find that many have died. She tells me that I'm feeding them too much food, and that they are eating themselves to death. (sounds crazy to me) What is the real reason, if any at all?

So, i have 3 aquariums. right now i am working on my 55 gallon tank. in my 55 gallon tank is freshwater tropical community fish. i love taking care of fish so far and i was wonder-ing how much harder it would be for me to start a slat water aquarium. i have a 55gallon tank. 20 gallon tank. and a 10 gallon tank. i would like to use one aquarium that i already have to start off with. although, all my aquariums have fresh water fish in them, so i could go get another tank but i already have 3 and there relly is no more room! lol. but i was thinking, how hard- and how much time -and everything that i would need to start a 20 gallon or a 29 gallon salt water aquarium. i need every little detaile, like filter's for the reef's what rock's to put in there what rock's you can put togather what different types of salt water aquqriums are there, everything starting from beging to end, PLEASE. i heard there were some small salt water fish you could put in the tank after 30 day's, unlike 2 mounths

My husband and I have a large aquarium with several Tetras. Just a day or two ago, a small rockish/flowery looking prop was knocked over, and a low coral prop right next to it was covered up with the pebbles we have at the bottom of the tank. I am certain that the fish did it because my husband and I live alone, with nobody else coming into the house. We have had the fish for about nine months, and they have never done this before. Any answers on why this would happen?

My mystery snail eggs have hatched, and I have little baby snails amongst the gravel in my tank. They are so small, I would not have noticed them were it not for my observant 6-year old daughter. And, to make matters worse, they are practically the same color as the fish poop.

I usually vacuum out the tank once/week in order to freshen the water and clean up the gravel. But, this week, I am afraid to vacuum because of the baby snails. If you have had experience with this, please answer. But no speculation please. If I wanted a guess, I would make the guess on my own... The vacuum has some sort of a stopper on it so it won't vacuum up the gravel, but it will get the poop. As far as width and weight, I would guess the baby snails are slightly bigger than the poop, but smaller than the gravel. Will they get sucked up by the siphon???

what would be the best filtration for a 90 gal?...2 emperor 400 (800gph total), or an eheim canister filter pumping 300 gph?...it's much much cheaper to get 2 emperors than 1 canister, so was wondering what would be best???
also have 2 powerheads with pre-filter. (300 gph ea.)
