I just posted about my betta fish and buying the shrimp. Now, I am wondering, why he wont eat. When i first purchased him, he was fine. He ate and swam around and was fine. But then two days ago i changed his water and i took him out of the bowl and put him in a little one. I didnt use soap i just rinsed it with warm water. Then i put him back in the bowl. Since then he wont eat like he used to. And he gets really scared and flops around when i walk by the bowl. Whats wrong??????

Do u know how to do water changes properly? It could be a shock for too much original water removed or coz u used tap water.
Only remove about 10 or 20% of the water, and replace it with conditioned tap water. Which is tap water mixed with the right dosage of chlorine eliminator, u can pick some up at the fish store. It cleans out and eliminates all the bacteria, toxins and chemicals harmful to fish, which is found in tap water.
And do u have a heater? It could also be from the shock of the wrong temperature water. If ur tank is too small for a heater, with clean, soap free hands put ur finger in the original water, when ur betta was fine.
And get a feel of wat the temperature is.
Or search on the net to find the temp. for bettas.
Because i hand feed my fish (trained) i know the temp of the water and i have a heater. But if u dont try to improvise the water temp like i have said before, i mix cold water with a bit of warm water and check with my finger.
Well i hope i helped =]

Best of luck with ur betta!~ ^-^

If you are just using tap water you will need to go to your nearest petstore.. maybe tomorrow or whenever you can. I would recommened buying a product called: Prime by SeaChem. This will clear your tapwater of chlorine, chloramine and things that will be toxic to your fish. Someone mentioned that water temperature could be a problem so what you could do is buy a thermometer preferably two of them. Put one in your Bettas tank and leave one for when adding new water, or water changes. Check your bettas water temp. then try to get the tapwater temp. as closley matched. One more thing if there is no way you can get to the petstore on time take a bucket and fill it with as much water you need when you do water changes and let it sit out for about a day or two. This will help get rid of some of the chlorine. Hope your betta gets better.

First of all, your betta is not happy because you put him in a bowl, you're suppose to get at least a 2.5 gallon filtered and heated tank, you shorten his life dramatically in a bowl, they usually only live about 2 years in there, but in a tank with proper care they can live up to 7 years

2.) did you acclimate him to his new surroundings before you put him into his new water???? If you do a complete waterchange you have to put him in a bag or the cup him came in and float it for at least 30 min before you put your betta back into the bowl

3.) Did you use a conditioner to make your water fish safe??????????? Very important, otherwise your fish will go into shock and die

Hope that helps
Good luck

My guess is that it's shock from the change in water parameters. Whenever you put your betta into new water, you must make sure of a few things:

1. The water must be conditioned. Tapwater contains substances like chlorine, chloramine and trace metals that are toxic to fish. You need to use a water conditioner like Prime, Novaqua or AquaSafe - anything from your local fish store that says it removes chlorine AND chloramine will do. Putting your fish into untreated tapwater can cause them to go into terrible shock and possibly die.

2. The temperature of the water your betta is in must be equal to the temperature of the water you are about to put your betta into. Bettas can only take temperature changes of about one degree at a time - anything more than this puts terrible stress on their system which can give way to all kinds of illnesses. Please don't use your fingers to test the difference in temperature - invest in a thermometer from your pet store. It should only cost a couple of dollars.

By the way, I don't really want to nag at you for this, but your betta should really be in at least 2 gallons of heated, filtered water.

He may be too stressed from the tank changes. Leave him in a dark room for a couple days, but still try feeding him. The darkness will lower his stress. The bowl might be too small for a Betta, they really should have 2.5 gallons, but that isn't why he's not eating, or he wouldn't have eaten when you first got him.
