My male betta is maintaining a huge bubble nest three times his size and it's taking a mountain shape. He flares up a lot when I get near his aquarium as if he wants to attack me.

Do I need to get him a female to calm him down?

Tee 8T7 - I think someone gave you a thumbs down because I read somewhere that it is the male that takes care of the fertilized eggs, killing any other bettas and even his mate if they are close by the nest.

Mimik - I don't plan to raise babies. If he does make babies I will just kill them by feeding them to predator fish. But since a female won't calm him down I won't get him one - thanks for the answer.

Sarah O - thanks for website.

Wow your guy is definitely happy and content in his home. Most males make bubble nests when they are happy, healthy and want to breed. No need to get him a female, just let him keep building. If you get tired of seeing it, just tear it down when you do water changes. As someone else pointed out you could breed them but Betta fry are very hard to keep alive so they wouldn't be worth raising for feeder fish.

A female will not calm him down. You will just get a bunch of baby bettas! NOT GOOD, if you don't know how to raise the babies! :-) Flaring and bubble nests means he's happy and healthy, and doing his own betta thing. Just leave him be in his tank/jar. See http://www.bettatalk.com/ for more info on bettas.
Good luck, I hope this helped.

Only get him a female if you want to witness the fascinating spawning behavior, followed by the male caring for his young and then have the time/patience/know how to properly care for, raise and eventually find homes for the resulting offspring.

Otherwise don't get him a female. It will most certainly not "calm him down". In fact it may make him even more aggresive and female bettas die quite frequently in spawning attempts in home aquariums

Betta males are a bit feisty by nature. Making a bubble nest is a sign of healthy, happy male that is ready for breeding. It does not mean he needs to be bred.

My Charlie has lived for several months with just other types of fish and has built several lovely nests. He is happy as a clam :)

Your betta may well be under pressure on the 2nd and nonetheless adapting to his new environment. it may be perfect to maintain yor betta in a tank (2.5 gal a minimum of), additionally make confident that the water is heat (seventy 8-82F). it may help additionally in case you may positioned a mirror beside him, to flare at his contemplated image for some (5-10) minutes on a daily basis.

This is actually a very good sign. It means that he is healthy and happy and ready to spawn. I wouldn't get him a female unless you actually want betta babies.

No, you don't. Don't worry about his behaviour; all bettas vary in temperament, and your betta is just more aggressive. Besides, getting him a female might even give him incentive to fuel his efforts even further. So I don't recommend it.

bubbles mean that he wants to mate. "Do not get him a female". After they mate the female will kill the male. Its not worth it, he'll be fine, I've been raising bettas for 4 years and they are just fine without a female

who ever is rating my answer as bad obviously doesnt know a thing about bettas.
