My girlfriend and I have recently purchased some gold fish. Well quite often we find that many have died. She tells me that I'm feeding them too much food, and that they are eating themselves to death. (sounds crazy to me) What is the real reason, if any at all?

for gold fish only give them what they can cosnume in about 5 mins, so a little pinch at a time. You only need to feed gold fish once a day. and yes you can kill fish by over feeding. Sometimes you can go for days without also feeding fish.

cheers

The food may be partly to blame, but probably not the only cause.

You mention goldfish in the plural, so there have to be at least two fish, maybe more. They're probably still small, and you got a smallish tank (maybe a 10 gallon). But you probably put the fish in too soon.

In a mature tank, there are bacteria that will break down your fishs' wastes. When they eat, they create waste, and part of this waste is ammonia, which is toxic to them. The more they eat, the more ammonia they produce. In a tank that's been running longer, the bacteria that are present will convert the ammonia to nitrite (which is also toxic), then to nitrate, which tour fish can live in in moderate amounts. The problem you have is that your tank doesn't have enough bacteria in it yet to go through this cycle.

Another thing that should be happening that you don't mention here is that the water should be getting cloudy. The "cloud" is caused by the bacteria which are multiplying to take advantage of the ammonia and nitrite. As long as there are more of these compounds than the bacteria can convert, their population will multiply. Once there are enough bacteria that all the ammonia and nitrite are being converted, the reproduction will slow down and the cloudiness will go away on it's own. If you see cloudy water, realize this is what's happening, and you need to have the bacteria in your tank - don't take everything out and clean - you'll only be removing the bacteria you need and prolonging the entire process.

You can help the fish by making sure you aren't overfeeding them (only give what they can eat in 2-3 minutes, twice a day, no more - if there's food left after that time, use a net to scoop it out). Uneaten food, when it decomposes, also produces ammonia. You'll also need to do partial water changes of about 25% once a week, or smaller changes of 10-15% twice a week to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels down until the cycle is complete. Use a gravel vacuum to remove wastes and food that may be in the gravel.

Depending on the type of goldfish you bought, they can grow to 8-18 inches and should have 10-15 gallons of water each by the time they're adults. It's a myth that fish will only grow to the size of their tanks.

You can overfeed goldfish. Just feed them a pinch of food, 1-2 times per day.

It could also be that the tank (or things in it) isn't clean, the water isn't pure (you have to use bottled or dechlorinated water), or the filter is killing them.

on occasion fish in simple terms leap out of the tank. it incredibly is common for some varieties of fish, and that i've got had guppies and all varieties of fish leap out of my tank. the perfect element i will permit you recognize is get a disguise, a sort of mesh ones, and placed that over any openings. stable success!
