Hi everyone,

I have two red eared sliders and I’m going to upgrade them to a bigger tank soon (50 or so gallons). They make poo all day and I need something more powerful to filter it out. I currently have a Whisper 40 in-tank filter, which does not do a good job and requires tons of maintenance.

I know the basics of filtration (chemical, biological, mechanical) and water quality but what I want to know more about are canister filters. I’ve looked up a bunch of sites but I don’t understand what many of them are talking about…all kinds of unexplained jargon and descriptions of things I’ve never seen.

Can you give me a detailed beginner’s introduction to canister filters? For example, what does it mean to “prime”? How do you change filter media, and how often do you do it? What are some canisters you would recommend for fudgy turtles, keeping in mind quality, power, ease of maintenance, and price?

Thanks!

it's a male beta, and he is like pink/red, with blue eyes! hes so pretty

i was thinking Tarzan but i would think the fish should be blue or green for that name....or Tracy, bc thats the main character in Hairspray, and i'm obsessed. [as u can tell, i love broadway plays.]

any other name ideas?

i have a 20 gallon tank with a under gravel filter, and 2 top filters "rated at,"1" 10gal,"1" 20gal," i have about 27 assorted plants in it.. 5 Tiger Barb's, 1 Beta Crown Tail, 2 Gerome's, 1 Catfish, 1 Chinese algae eater, and 4 "Baby" Electric Blue Cichlid's "temp, soon to be in 55gal," all add up to exactly 18 inch's total.. i feed them 2 times a day, once at 9am and once at 9pm, about a quarter size of food. i have taken all the plant's out at one time and it just got yellower so i put them back in.. although i have noticed that i have to wash my filter's every 2 day's cuz they fill up with stuff.. is there any way to get ride of the yellow fog, and maybe get it so im not cleaning filter's every 2days .. if possible??

i also have a 55gal doing the same thing but its a clear fog.. and i only have about 20 inches of fish in it.. under gravel and a dual bio wheel filter..

both have been up for a good while, and filter's are only 2 weeks old...

I have an oscar and a pleco in a 55 gallon tank. The oscar is not even a year old and is probably like 6 inches long. He is not big. My pleco on the other hand is huge. We JUST did a total water change 3 days ago, put in new filters, and again already the water is disgusting and green. Why can't we keep this tank clean?? Isn't the pleco supposed to help? Do I need a bigger thank for just the two of them? I feed my oscar small amounts at a time, I make sure he eats everything before I give him more, and I scoop what he doesnt eat out of the tank.

Maybe my filter (not the cartridges) itself sucks? But the cartridges always have a ton of stuff on them. I just dont' know what to do and I feel bad for my fishies living in filth.

heeeeelp

The tank has 6 tadpoles, 2 large and 4 smaller. They have recently started to go quickly to the surface and blow a bubble, then swim down again. Why do they do this? The bubbles are along the water surface and edges of tank.
Thanks!

i recently upgraded my lighting in hopes to add coral once i can get my water parameters in order. I've had the tank for about 6 months and just added 2 10000°K HQI double-ended metal halide and 2 actinic blue compact fluorescent lights totaling 492 watts. before i just had two standard florecent lights. Will the tank have to cycle again?

Leave it to my husband to pick a female black mystery snail to put into our 20 gallon with our male apple snail. He saw the first egg sack and decided he wanted to let them hatch and have little baby snails. Well then there was another and another and I tried to remove as many egg sacks as I saw but I'm sure some were hidden from my view. Anyhow, now we are overrun with lots of snails. While they are cute there are just way too many! I asked one of our local fish stores if they'd take them off our hands & they said they only buy their snails from "certified snail breeders". Any thoughts, ideas?

I have two 75 gallon tanks, one with oscars and a black ghost knife and another with angels and assorted tetras. The past few weeks I've noticed hundreds of these worms in both tanks. They are in the gravel and on the underside of the hood. Both tanks have been well established for over 3 years and no new stock has been added for over 1 year. I've tried to remove excess food by siphoning the gravel once a day for a week and cleaning the entire filter system. Nothing seems to get rid of them. All the water parameters are good. They don't seem to cause any harm to the fish but are an eyesore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd resort to chemical warfare as a last ditch effort but am not too sure what the worms are and don't want to harm my fish. See the links below for pictures.

so, i bought some of this from the pet store. It's in the fish section. It's kinda white and orange rock. It think it's a mix of limestone and sandstone - but I'm not sure. Anyway- could this cloud my tank? I remember when I got it I rinsed it well but it seemed sort of "powdery". Just wondering if it's ok for tank use.

I was given an aquarium a few weeks ago and in the past 4 days I have lost an angel and a butterfly fish, there were no signs of disease on either and both seemed active and were feeding previously. There is a slight greasy film on the surface of the water so I am wondering whether it might be a good idea to change the water. it is filtered and is at 25degrees, how do I go about changing it? do I need to just change it a half at a time? shall I take the fish out first and if I do how do I get the fresh water up to temp before I put them back in? the heater takes bloody ages to get it up to 25.
Help!!! I haven't had much dealings with fishies!!
