On ours we tried alot of things that didn't work. The most effective way to get most of it off was a straight razor and scraping it off like you would paint off a window. Be careful around the caulking and try not to slice off your fingers :) You can pick up a straight razor holder at any hardware store cheap. Good luck.

cleaner that works on the stubborn mineral deposits that typically build up in aquariums, particularly at the water line. Whether you have a fresh or saltwater tank, Spot-X is safe for you and for your fish. Any residue that might be left in the tank will not harm your fish since Spot-X is made from shells. Empty tank of fish and water. You must do this because Spot-X will not work if submerged in water.

Just use straight vinegar, let it soak in and wash it off with hot water
Just because you give it away doesn't mean that you should use chemicals, it's cruel and the future fishkeeper will loose lot's of fish because of your care lessness

If you don't care about toxicity, then use Lime Away, baby! It's great stuff, trust me. I live in FL and the water here is super hard! I add all kinds of driftwood and brown leaves to my tank just to get the PH down to 8.2! I know all about hard water stains.

If you want to be nicer about it and not poison any fish someone might want to put in there someday, try scrubbing them with vinegar. It's slower, but it works pretty well and is much less toxic. You just have to add more "elbow grease".
