It's not easy to tell the male Goldfish from the female Goldfish. Professional breeders can often tell the difference, but it's difficult for them to explain how they do it.
Mature female Goldfish are usually plumper, and mature males have little bumps on their heads, called tubercles, that turn white and are easier to see, when the Goldfish spawn. Go here: http://www.aquariumfish.net/catalog_pages/goldfish_and_koi/breeding_goldfish_p3.htm#hannah for more information about determining the gender of Goldfish.

You can only tell if they're at least a year old and they're in spawning condition. The males get white tubercles (looks like pimples) on the covers of the gills and along the front edges of the side fins. There's also a difference in the shape of the vents (anus). This link has photos so you'll know what to look for: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

hear to Karen S and Sam P they are precise! however the goldfish are nevertheless exciting whether you do not attempt to reproduce them because of the fact they are going to swim as much as the glass (begging for food) once you walk by making use of. Mollys (the stay bearers) do this too, yet they are going to breed lots which you will not know what to do with the babies. they are exciting nevertheless and are available all styles of colorings and shapes.

hi, male goldfish will have tubercle's [little white spots on their gills] they also will chase females around trying to push a female into weeds by rubbing up against them, in trying to get her to mate.
