Fish - February 2007

My 1-gallon betta aquarium's water has been looking greenish-tinged and a little more opaque than water should be. I've had it for about 5 months and so far have just tried doing water changes - changed half the water, and that only helped just a little. There is a bit of algae growth, not what I would call really bad, and in among the rocks there is a bit of debris. Also the bubbler tube isn't making bubbles as much as it was when I first set it up about 5 months ago. Do I need to replace the little sponge-like bubblemaker (you know the thing that hooks up to the air tube and the bubbles come out of it and rise up from under the gravel)?

My husband is FREAKING OUT about the tank because it's not pure clear water. I'm not as concerned about it, as I think a certain amount of algae and stuff is normal, but I would like to know what may be done to get clearer-looking water if possible.

I was at Country Living today, and it also has a pet department among hardware. So right infront of the store, they have a 150 gallon tank. In it were very few fish, including two bull heads, and a snake eel thingy, and this Huge white fish. It's like the size of a 19 inch monitor screen, and it's kinda pink white, with red or pink veins all through it. It said, what it was on the sign, but I didn't get a good look at the name. It said, it was a "Giant Goutani", or something. Not grouper, something else that begins with a Giant G fish. Can anyone tell me what it's called?

What can I use to water proof a bamboo water spout for my pond from getting moldy and still be safe for my fish and plants??

Would like it to still look natural (not shiny), but if not, that is ok...

my tank is about 10 gallons gut they're small. They come out if no one around, but for the most part they are not very active. i did about a 50% water change 1 week ago. I also use AquaSafe. I feed them jumbo Ciclid sticks. I think I may need to cycle my tank but I'm not quite sure how, or how often. I tried feeding them Rose Red feeders and they seem to like those okay and eat them.

I just bought a couple female guppies from the store and one already died. and today I noticed one of my barbs has a few white spots on his fins and now my male guppy has white spots all over his fin. What's the easiest and fastest way to kill ich?

My guppie is freaking out and smashing itself down on the bottom of the tank. I have three of them. One is really colorful, ine is sory of colorful and this one is pretty dull. They are feeder guppies that I have as pets. She is breathing hard and flaring her fins. What is wrong with her? Help me.

they are similar in size and shape.. and their habitat is the same also. I have never kept them together so I don't know whether they would school or not. would they?

I have been reading a lot of books and thinking about starting a saltwater aquarium. Could someone out there who has done this let me know what your initial setup costs were approximately? Also what about maintenance costs on a monthly or yearly basis?

Please help me!
i need to know how long it take's to cycle a 55 gallon tank, what is the best product to use and when can i put the fish in there. i am trying to set this up in time for valentines day and would really like to know.
i am going to put yellow electric cichlids in there and a little later figure 8 puffers.
i need to also know if the fish need to be in there because i hear in some cases the fish need to be in there to complete the cycle and i heard that they can't until the cycle is done.

I have a 10 gallon tank and a want to upgrade to at least a 55 gallon. How much do different sized tanks cost new and used. what about stands? is $125 for a 55 tank stand and filters good?

I have just bought 2 Senegal (Dinosaur) Bichirs and 1 Dragon Goby. Along with these i have tiger barbs serpae tetras black fin sharks upside down catfish khulii loaches 2 giant danios, 4 platys 4 fairly large Lyretail Mollies a blue gourami. I wonder how this will work out as the Bichirs and Goby grow larger. I have been told that the barbs are too fast and agressive to get eaten. and the mollies are quiet large. I wonder if this will work.

My little bro's 2nd B-day is coming up and I wanted to get him some fish.So I bought him a small 5-gallon tetra products fishtank.And I wanted to get him a small african frog you find at walmart and some fresh water trapoical fish.Does anyone have any good suggestions he only need 5-7 fish? And can anyone tell me if guppies would be a good idea since he is so young?

one of my tanks have no fish in it at the moment.trying to get everythin where is susposto be for my tropical fish had things wrong with my tank had to put them in my other one..problem is there is alot of extra food flakes in the bottom of my tank now big filter is on and i am constantily taking the fish net and removing some of it is there anything else i can do to get it out quicker with out haveing too change all the water and wash everything..

I have one goldfish, at least now I do. My other one died today. his body had developed two nice sized lumps. One one the right side towards its tail, the other just behind its left front fin. I like to think I'm pretty good at keeping the water really clean. Both are/was over 2 years old. I was getting ready to buy a bigger tank to accomodate their growth. My question is why do you think my fish died? And do you think my current goldie is still going to need the bigger tank now that it has it all to itself?
