Please remember that pirahna are actually a schooling fish. They need 6 or more of their own kind in a very spacious aquarium to feel comfortable. One reason people report that pirahna are "shy" fish is the fact that they are not being kept in appropriately sized groups, and are therefore not thriving. You would need at least a 125 gallon aquarium to properly keep this species. Also, before you consider buying pirahna, make sure they are legal to own in your state.

There are five genera of piranha out there, and under those are many different species. Under what's the classically know genus of piranha, there are approximately 25 species/subspecies. They are mainly carnivorous and will eat fresh or frozen shrimp or fish, as well as other types of fish food. The most important thing is to rotate their food so they get a well balanced diet. The most commonly owned pet variety is the red-bellied piranha, but other types are available. I know that a fish store near where I am (in MD) has numerous varieties of piranha. Hope this helps!

there are lots of differant types of pirahna, the most comman however is red-bellies.
They will eat just about anything you feed the veggies, chicken hearts, beef heart, goldfish, shrinp, scallops, krill, and mine for some strange reason like to eat my snails that I use to clean the tank. They are very shy and scared fish, unlike what most people think that they are vicious fish. They would rather hide then bother you while cleaning their tank

There are 50+ species of piranha. They are omnivores, eating vegetation and meat. They need a balanced diet with both to be healthy.

Don't know about the types. You might not want to stick your arm in the tank though.
