It is definately possible. I did it in high school as a psychology test on learning. Do it the way Kevin specified. LOL-I actually saw the Mythbusters episode too. I was LMAO the whole time at the thought of me doing it before them!

Good Luck!

Think about how long it takes to teach a little child to read. Many years. They just don't learn to read in a couple of weeks. It takes lots of long, hard, patient dedicated teaching and training. Next, goldfish can't "jump" like Shamu. They're just basically not equipped to do jumping, maybe comets, maybe, but definitely not fancies, but they can be taught to swim through hoops and do other tricks. It basically comes down to associating food with a certain behavior. Give your fish a large enough tank, not only for health reasons, but also so they can easily navigate through their tricks and the learning process. Those plastic storage containers that are larger in area but less deep, work really well for this. And goldies are little piggies! Don't overfeed them in an effort to train more quickly. It'll just kill them! Good luck and have fun!

Goldfish have long memories, several months. The big thing you must know is to keep the fish in a large, cycled tank. Feeder fish should have 20 gallons per three inches of fish. It won't do good for you to try training a fish and have it die when you are making progress.

I'm not exactally how sure how you would go about training a fish to do that but it is possible. No matter what people say about them being stupid and having a three second memory span, it's not true. Goldfish are inteligent fish. You just have to know how to bring it out. You can teach them to ring a bell. sometimes they will pick up rocks and move them around like a soccor ball. They really are smart fish. Sorry I cant tell you how to do it.

you create a barrier with a hoop in the middle
you place fish on one side and food one the other
every day you move the hoop up and up until eventually when its out of the aquarium and they have to jump through the hoop to reach the food
