I have a neutered two year old male Catahoula and two female Australian Shepherds (both spayed). My male catahoula is the dominant of the three and has a tendency to growl if one of them is not in the designated spot in the living room. I took him to a behavior specialist and I follow their tips on using my hand as a mouth and touching his neck to get him to stop. All he does is start growling at me while wagging his tail. I dont get it. If I grab his collar to "snap" him out of his focus on the other dogs, he gets even more aggresive and the hair on the back of his shoulder stands up. Am I doing something wrong? He attacked my older Aussie because she was standing in between him and I. I put him on the ground in a submissive position, let the older Aussie stand above him to show dominance, and now all of this is happening. Please help if you have a Catahoula..

Ok so here's the story I have a 10 month old Siberian Husky/Labrador Mix who I adore more than anything. My dad on the other hand is not so crazy about him. Duke (the puppy) has a chewing problem. When I bring him inside he doesn't chew on anything except his chew bones..Outside though he's a holy terror He chews up lawn furniture, water hoses, plants, fences, wood for our fireplace, basically anything..
Now I understand he's been teething and I give him lots of "chewies" to help and it does..I've tried Bitter Apple, Bitter Yuck , Hot chili pepper, Cajun pepper, You name it I've tried it.

It was recommended that I try a shock training colar which I dittoed immediately.. I don't have the willpower to do that to Dukers.. and my brother would abuse it.. But main thing is we can't keep nice things in the backyard and its pissing my dad off because he really likes having the yards look nice which I understand...so I have got to get Duke to stop chewing........

any ideas? PLZ HELP!!!

I have a jack russle who eats and swallows EVERYTHING!!! She eats garbage, plastic rap, seeds, leaves. Then she yaks it up or poohs it out. She hacked up tinsle, and poohed out string, tin foil, and plastic parts. She even raids the garbage can in the bathroom if any guest don't know to keep the door shut. We let her into the living room and kitchen which is doggie proof. When we catch her she runs off and swallows it. we have a crate for her and keep her on a leash and watch her at all times but she will actually sneek it and eat fast. She is almost a year old. Any ideas to get a dog to stop chewing and swallowing things?

In September, my dog got out of my yard (my sister's bf left the gate open and I didn't know), and attacked another dog. The whole incident was about 15 seconds, as I saw my dog running out the gate and a man walking his dog. My dog heard me yell his name and ran right back into the yard, AFTER my dog bit the dog once on the head. I was upset, the man left, I called the Humane Society, I'm assuming he did as well. They never showed up for any sort of investigation, I've called twice since Sept. I'm not sure what to do because I don't know where this man lives, I only see him walking his dog occasionally. Every time he sees me he screams at me and makes me cry (I know, I'm a frigging baby). Anyway, I feel terrible about what happened. My dog loves humans, but hates other dogs. I walk him with a muzzle and leash. He's 8 years old, this is an isolated incident. This guy wants my dog put down, and I'm living in frigging turmoil because the dumb Humane Society isn't doing their job.

I know this may seem a little long but I can't talk to anyone at home about it so bear with me. The story goes like this. I am a major animal lover and I especially love dogs. Since I can remember I have been asking my dad for a dog. He always says no and he always has a different reason. However, last year he let me foster a dog during the summer. I took very good care of the dog BY MYSELF. I cleaned up after every mess, I took her out at least 5 times every day and I took her everywhere I went (I really loved her and I miss her terribly - my dad didn't let me keep her). Now, for my 17th birthday I asked my dad to let me foster again. He gave me the impression he was going to say yes (he was asking about the dog and how long I would foster) but in the end he said no. He said it wouldn't be fair to the dog to bring him in a home and then send him back to kennels. The thing is I was not going to send him back. I am leaving to University after this year of school...(continued)

If my Dog wrote the Dictionary

Lead. A strap which attaches to your collar, enabling you to lead your person where you want him/her to go.

Dog Bed. Any soft, clean surface, such as the white bedspread in the guest room or the newly upholstered couch in the living room.

Drool. What you do when your persons have food and you don't. To do this properly you must sit as close as you can and look sad and let the drool fall to the floor, or better yet, on their laps.

Sniff. A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dog's rear end and inhale deeply; repeat several times, or until your person makes you stop.

Dustbin. A container which your neighbors put out once a week to test your ingenuity. You must stand on your hind legs and try to push the lid off with your nose. If you do it right you are rewarded with margarine wrappers to shred, beef bones to consume and mouldy crusts of bread.

Bicycles. Two-wheeled exercise machines, invented for dogs to control body fat. To get maximum aerobic benefit, you must hide behind a bush and dash out, bark loudly and run alongside for a few yards; the person then swerves and falls into the bushes, and you prance away.

Deafness. Affects dogs when their person wants them in and they want to stay out. Symptoms include staring blankly at the person, then running in the opposite direction, or lying down.

Thunder. A signal that the world is coming to an end. Humans remain amazingly calm during thunderstorms, so it is necessary to warn them of the danger by trembling uncontrollably, panting, rolling your eyes wildly, and following at their heels.

Wastebasket. A dog toy filled with paper, envelopes, and old candy wrappers. When you get bored, turn over the basket and strew the papers all over the house until your person comes home.

Sofa. A piece of furniture, to dogs as napkins are to people. After eating it is polite to run up and down the front of the sofa and wipe your whiskers clean.

Bath. This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently.

Lean. Every good dog's response to the command "sit!" especially if your person is dressed for an evening out. Incredibly effective before black-tie events.

Bump. The best way to get your human's attention when they are drinking a fresh cup of coffee or tea.

Goose bump. A maneuver to use as a last resort when a regular Bump doesn't get the attention you require...especially effective when combined with Sniff (See above).

Love. A feeling of intense affection, given freely and without restriction. The best way you can show your love is to wag your tail. If you're lucky, a human will love you in return.

I'm posting this question a second time because I got a lot of thoughtful answers but I want more...

I've been debating getting a dog for my 800ft² apartment but every time I broach the subject my mother informs me it would be cruel to leave the dog unattended during working hours. Now, I love animals and I would walk it, feed it and give it the love and attention it needed as soon as I got home and before I left in the morning. Also seems to me if I were to rescue one from a shelter, I'd be providing a much better life for it in general. Is it selfish of me to subject a dog to these conditions or is it a little mean of my mother to continually harp on this concern and deny me the happiness I know I'd get from pet companionship. Am I wrong in thinking lots of people leave their pets unattended when they work and this is perfectly normal and not torture for the dog. I need arguments, justifications and any evidence whatsoever to refute a self-proclaimed animal behavioral expert.

My 8 week old puppy keeps peeing on things. I know she isn't old enough to control her bladder very well yet, but I take her out about 8 times a day. She'll pee every time so it makes no sense that she still goes in the house. I'll take her out and she will pee then ten minutes later she will pee on on the carpet. She doesn't have a specific spot she pees on she just goes anywhere, especially on people's things. like a jacket on a chair or a purse. Does anyone know why she does this and how to stop it?

Technically, its not on our private property, but on the "city's" which is our responsablity to take care of. We have 2 small children and to get in the car they have to cross the grass and every so often the kids will step in this crap. I have thought about scooping it and placing it in the neighbor's yard when they are not home, but we have have been neighbors for years and don't want to ruin that. Please send me suggestions.

my mom has wanted this dog for 4 weeks and she keeps saying in random situations;"I just cant keep my mind off that puppy", or, "That dog would be very good with our family." every time she says it, everyone near her says "THAN GO GET THE DOG!!!" my dad is just slowing things down by accusing my mom of saying she wont get it than she will. the dog is right now living with about 5 other dogs and getting older by the second. the rest of my siblings are trying to get my mom to go get the dog but she keeps saying we dont have the food or the toys or the bed, etc.. and we tell her to go get the stuff but she says she doesnt know if we are even going to get it. if we wait any longer, when we DO get the dog it will have developed bad habits that we cant fix... what should i do?

I have a golden retriever. He chokes himself when I try to walk him on a leash outside. He gets to run around in our backyard that is fenced in. He is also partly an inside dog. He's a homebody, but when we try to take him for walks, he wants to take off running.
