Has anyone got any advice on how we can stop our 2 year old Kelpie from chewing our garden hoses into pieces.
The hose connects to the shed evaporative cooler, and shed sink, and it's annoying if it has to be disconnected all the time.
Any ideas?

A close friend of the family has a mixed dog that does what she pleases. The dog barks in a ferocious manner when people leave, in a territorial sense. When people have food she's all up in their face and if you even turn for a slight second, she'll nab your food and she is still not disciplined. The dog also has a nasty nasty habit of peeing/pooping in every single room the dog has access too, eating the cat's feces from the litter box - anything she wants, she gets to do. Her owners yell at her when she lays waste inside, or eats cat feces, but not in a manner to have an effect. They let the dog out about every 2 hours for a good 20 minutes. She's always rewarded with treats. There's times that she will come right back in, and go pee/poo somewhere they're not looking. Their house is starting to smell so bad that people just don't want to go over there due to the overwhelming odor. What steps need to be taken to get this dog in order, and to relay the information in a friendly manner?

I've got a 16 year-old-bichon who lives with my parents. He's healthier than ever, still runs around. But he's getting senile. For one, he pees and poops around my parents' house every other day. They keep a clean house and absolutely hate him. For two, he's increasingly moody... whines a lot, and gets dangerously snappy when woken up (since he sleeps all the time, he has to be woken up to be fed and taken to the restroom). For three, he's somewhat blind and doesn't hear well. Sometimes he starts barking for no reason. My parents think he's losing it... My whole family adores dogs, but they all want to put our bichon to sleep. I disagree. But I want to know everyone's thoughts on the ethics of this.

I recently had my wood floors refinished in the main living area of the house....my dog had no problem being in this part of the house previously or after the finish job.....However, the job was botched and someone else had to come back and make it right. Strangely, ever since then my dog will not go into that part of the house. He is absolutely against going in there, and to even try to get him to go in there makes him even more anxious about it. There is no reasonable explanation as to why this has happened....I just want him to be able to enjoy the rest of the house with everyone else - He loves to be around people, and it makes me sad that this fear is keeping him sequestered to the bedroom. What can I do? I've tried to lure him with food - doesn't work....Help!

My puppy is four months old and for now I leave her in a crate when I am gone (even though I really don't like it). I make sure to be gone no more than three hours at a time. I'm with her for most of the day. I have a dog door, but I know it will be a while before I can give her free reign in the house.

I live in the desert, and winter days are nice here. Usually in the 60's or 70's. I have a nice backyard with two covered porches. Right now I feel Abbie is too young to leave alone outside, which is why I crate her. What I'm wondering is, at what (approximate) age do you think I should be able to leave her outside alone?

I know its comfortable and all but with interest by the time its paid off it will cost me nearly 1000 dollars.

I think its more annoying to me because the damn dog knows I don't want it on my couch. It jumps off every time I walk in the room. we do have another couch that is leather but not not as nice in another room and it is always dog accessible.

my roomate says to walk it off my couch and onto the other one than give him a treat. but that is not my job. its not my dog.

I would rather just beat it with a broom. but I don't. I just yell at it. okay... once I threw a hat at it. but even after that. as soon as no one is looking... he's back on the couch.

I don't hate dogs, I just hate dogs that aren't mine.

If I had a dog it would be awesome. it wouldn't get on my couch unless invited and I would train it to bite his dog when it trys to go on my couch.

I have a 2yr. old english bulldog that has HORRENDOUS gas! The smell is lterally breathtaking (the sound can be shocking as well).

She passes gas almost constantly. My house & furniture now permanently smell like her "toots".

She eats a high quality Lamb & Rice kibble, no table scraps, I mix plain yogurt in with her kibble (I heard that helped with gas). We walk her 3 times a day (morning, evening & before bed)....& bless her llittle heart she just keeps tooting.

I know that EBD are more prone to gas & that is a reality I gladly accepted when she became part of my family, but this is getting ridiculous!

I read an answer from someone that mentioned dogs being over-vaccinated. It had never crossed my mind that this could be an issue- how often SHOULD a puppy be vaccinated? My vet gave me a vaccination schedule for our new pup, but I thought I'd survey you guys, as well.

My dog has been walking funny, almost like shes constapated. She hugs her butt to anything near her (the wall, a persons leg) and shakes whenever anyone gets near her. She is a very nice talk and has been crying when people touch her sometimes? She walks almost like she is limping with her to back legs, but then jumps up on me when i call her, so I know her legs don't hurt her. Do these symtoms coorispond with anything?

My dogs, despite having expensive Kongs, pork twisties (at $10.00 a bag!!) and other toys, have chewed:

The insoles out of my slippers.

Chapstick.

Lipstick.

A cell phone charger.

Blankets on the bed.

Mind you, the lipstick, Chapstick and cell phone charger were all left on the bedroom floor of the resident slob here and were not my doing.

The youngest one is the worse culprit...I read they kind of grow out of this after three.

My friend's 2 y/o pit bull ate all of their solar lights, their driveway markers, chewed the siding on the house and chewed the stump where they cut the tree down, even though he has Kongs, etc.

I think this is the worse: this woman's dog ate her couch http://dandelionarts.com/blog/postwarcouch-thumb.jpg

I wan't a puppy so bad! everything I've tried hasn't worked. My mom knows I'm responsible enough for a puppy because I have two dogs right now and I take care of them myself. She even has kind of admitted that she wanted one, but still when ever I ask her she says no! I have ran out of ideas.

I have a 13week old puppy

he is a mixture of..lab/bearded collie/huntaway/blue heeler..

He is black with a bit of white on his chest and paws

He has quite large paws and legs and has grown HEAPS in the last two weeks of having him.

My question is, does anyone have a rough idea of how big he will be when he is an adult? Pictures would be awesome too if you have any.

Thanks :)

She is 5, and was left by the neighbors to starve after they moved out, 2 weeks later, she is ours! She is beautiful, black and white harlequin markings. We have kept her separated from our lab so far, initially she growled at him and we are unsure of her temprament with other animals. She has spent the past 5 years in a concrete back yard drinking out of a pool and fed infrequently. She is loving our attention, but do you think she will be able to assimilate to family life with a dog, cats and 3 kids?? She has a vet appt. tomorrow to assertain her overall helath, just curious about her spirit- what do you think???

Does anyone have information on prescription diets that will help prevent formation of struvite crystals in a dog's urine (by promoting acidic urine)? Does anyone have experience in using an acidifier in place of a prescription diet? If you have experience with both, which did you prefer, and why?

I am concerned mostly with my dog's comfort, and then with the nutritional value of the food. I am aware of the Hill's products, but prefer to use something more nutritious.

I'm not talking about little dogs...I'm a big dog person. But which of these do you think is the most absolute adorable (as puppies AND adults):
1. Golden Retrievers
2. Border Collies
3. St. Bernards
4. Labradors
5. Huskies
6. Newfoundlands

Any other suggestions?
