A close friend of the family has a mixed dog that does what she pleases. The dog barks in a ferocious manner when people leave, in a territorial sense. When people have food she's all up in their face and if you even turn for a slight second, she'll nab your food and she is still not disciplined. The dog also has a nasty nasty habit of peeing/pooping in every single room the dog has access too, eating the cat's feces from the litter box - anything she wants, she gets to do. Her owners yell at her when she lays waste inside, or eats cat feces, but not in a manner to have an effect. They let the dog out about every 2 hours for a good 20 minutes. She's always rewarded with treats. There's times that she will come right back in, and go pee/poo somewhere they're not looking. Their house is starting to smell so bad that people just don't want to go over there due to the overwhelming odor. What steps need to be taken to get this dog in order, and to relay the information in a friendly manner?

The dog needs to be trained. The dog has trained the people. The dog needs to sleep in a cage and learn to be trained to stay in it until it learns about where to go. Dogs don't go where they sleep so eventually it will get the idea. Of course the dog needs to be walked until it does all of its business. Yelling gets people no where. They need to learn how to discipline and train the dog. Perhaps you have a Pet Smart or Petco around. I know the one here had training classes. Not only does it help train the dogs, it trains the owners. . .And please, tell them to have the dog checked at a vet. When a dog jumps on you, put your knee out so that you can get them down without a big confrontation and tell the dog NO. Dogs quickly learn who they can push around and who they can't. If a dog jumped up and got the food off my plate, it would be the last time I walked into that house and I don't take kindly to having a dog pee/poop, walk through it and then jump on me or eat cat sh*t and then get anywhere near me. UGH! And since the house is starting to smell, I assume they don't clean up the mess as quick or thoroughly as they should. UGH! You can buy OdorBan at Sam's Wholesale and it is is very good about removing all odors and helps sanitize. Buy them a gallon. It's really good stuff anyway.

Getting a dog to change its behavior usually involves the owners changing their behavior. In this case they need to learn how to train a dog. They have not shown the dog the appropriate way to behave when people are around and eating, or leaving. Yelling at a dog may stop the behavior at that moment, but it does nothing to show the dog the behavior that is wanted.

Training, training, training. They're on the right track with treats, just need to be consistent about working on the other behaviors. Don't know about the peeing and pooping in the house. Maybe a vet visit is in order to make sure that the dog is not sick, different imbalances can cause a dog to be unable to hold their bladder, and behave aggressively.

She needs to be taught her manners quickly, this is the owners fault and they are just making a real big problem for them selves. I start my dogs at 14 weeks in the puppy training classes, then on to intermediate classes. A lot of people take their dogs no further than this but by then a lot should have been learned by both dog and owners and it sounds to me as if these owners have a lot to learn. They have let this dog become the boss and that needs to be stopped now.

Before any re-training or behaviour modification program is carried out the dog needs a health check from the vet. Providing all is OK then the vet may well be able to refer the owners to a behaviorist / trainer.

You haven't said anything about the dogs owners thoughts or opinions on this, you need to find out before tactfully suggesting the above.

wow this dog has no respect for its owners. Why??? because it is the pack leader and they are not. They do not respect people who are followers the same as they do not respect other dogs in the litter who are followers, this is how they become pack leader.
The dog wont respond to been yelled at as dogs don't. They need to be trained. This owner needs to be trained in how to become pack leader and how to train her dog.
Going out for 20 Min's in the yard is no good, they need to be out on a walk for at least 45 Min's each day twice a day. This stops a lot of issues immediately as a tired dog is a well behaved dog.She is been rewarded with treats for her behaviour so she thinks what she is doing is correct. They need to go right back to basics with the dog as if it were a puppy. As far as becoming a pack leader here are a few quick simple rules to follow.
Always make a dog sit before leashing it, always go out the door in front of the dog, have the dog walk on your left and keep it at the side of you or behind you, never in front. Always eat first before you feed your dogs and always make them work for their food.(walk them before they eat).

Take it to the vet for a check, if it comes back in good health, start some really needed training. This dog is in charge and needs to be put in its place.
