She is 5, and was left by the neighbors to starve after they moved out, 2 weeks later, she is ours! She is beautiful, black and white harlequin markings. We have kept her separated from our lab so far, initially she growled at him and we are unsure of her temprament with other animals. She has spent the past 5 years in a concrete back yard drinking out of a pool and fed infrequently. She is loving our attention, but do you think she will be able to assimilate to family life with a dog, cats and 3 kids?? She has a vet appt. tomorrow to assertain her overall helath, just curious about her spirit- what do you think???

Bless your heart---what a lucky dog to join your family!
Be patient and don't expect her to be trusting right away.
She has been severely neglected for years. People haven't been good to her. Take things slow and I expect you will all be fine. She may have had no other previous dog socialization or possibly bad experiences so don't force interaction.
My danes were not rescues but many other breeds have been.
Love, nurturing, patience, and consistency should work.

I have a rescued Great Dane. She has done fine with the cats, and all of my male dogs. She was scared of my female daschound and actually attacked her, so we had to keep them separated until my sis wanted my little one. She has growled at strange people, mostly territorial/protective, but hasn't snapped at anyone. Her other owner really spoiled her and treated her more like a person, but she has adjusted well to living as a dog, ie her bed, not mine, no people food (you dont want her getting gassy, trust me on that one) and stuff like that. She's my buddy now!

I've owned several rescue Danes..just rescued another one in July..a badly abused and malnourished Harlequin Dane boy.
Have patience, use kindness and lots of love and you should be fine. It just takes time.
