Hi Sara, this problem is uaually caused by diet. Try changing her food until you find one that relieves the problem and especially try different dried foods. Make sure she doesn't have human food treats.

You only got her from the shelter two days ago and it is likely that you are dealing with a combination of a dog who has had a change of diet on top of having a major change of surroundings.
Chihuahua are well known for being high strung dogs and she may be sweet, and you may be the best new owner in the world but the fact is that she is being surrounded by new smells, new sensations, and a new diet - which is a huge shock for her system.
If the farting started within a few hours of her eating the wet food then don't give her anymore. Stick to the dry food for a few more days and see if she settles down. If you notice that she is starting to look less perky, or if she goes off her food take her to the vet - otherwise just give her a chance to settle down. She may not be used to a good quality food and it could be making her tummy even more upset on top of the stress of moving to her new home.
If she settles down after a few days then you can think about introducing wet food again - or you may want to pamper her a little by finding home made pet food recipes. My dogs adore their home cooked food which goes on their biscuits, it is easy and quick to make - and they have not had any tummy upsets and are looking healthier than ever. The best part is that you known exactly what she is eating - rather than having to trust the pet food makers.
Good luck with your little girl, and thank you for rescuing a dog that needed a second chance.

Check out the food you gave her, many dogs have a big
problem with fish and fish meal, my sister's Lab has the
worst gas if he eats anything with fish in it. I noticed that
my chi got really bad breath from canned food, even the
expensive kind, they use too many by products, so I now
make her a chicken soup with brown rice. I cook a couple
of chicken legs and cut them up with the broth and brown
rice, I get small plastic containers and fill a couple, one goes
into the fridge with a handful of raw carrot slices, she gets
2 teaspoons on top of her kibble (she likes the Nutro Max
mini chunk) I put the other containers in the freezer and
defrost them as i need them, adding the carrot slices then.
She hasn't had any digestion problems and her breath is
pretty good for a dog.
To find out what is causing the fart problem, eliminate
anything with fist or fish protein, if its still a problem, try
foods with chicken or lamb instead of beef. Also watch out
for milk fats, most dogs have problems with milk fats-
some have problems with wheat.....it can take a bit of time
to find out what is the problem, but by trial and error you
can identify any food allergies. Good luck.

New food will make this happen. I have a pug so I know how bad a dog fart is. What I do with mine and it really works. Put about 1tsp of parsley flakes in her food. Dogs love the minty flavor. It will take the smell away from the fart. Do this in each feeding until the gas subsides.

First of all, I would switch to a better brand. Purina is an awful food- full of fillers and grains that your dog doesn't need. It's probably causing all the farting!
Try one of these:
Canidae
Wellness
Orijen
Nature's Variety
Solid Gold
Timberwolf Organics
Innova
Innova EVO
Taste of the Wild
Avoid:
Science Diet
Purina
Pedigree
Eukanuba
Iams
Ol' Roy
Kibbles & Bits
Other grocery store brands.
Canned (or raw) green tripe usually helps with digestion as well because they're full of digestive enzymes. Solid Gold has canned green tripe. It's incredibly stinky, but dogs love it (mine included- she gets raw tripe every week). If you don't have access to tripe, buy some probiotics or enzymes. They should be available in your local Vitamin Shoppe or Whole Foods. I currently have PB8 in my home. Good-quality probiotics should be liquid/refrigerated.
I would cut down on the human food, if she's even getting any- especially dairy! Dogs are lactose intolerant. They shouldn't be getting milk, cheese, etc. Of course, small amounts of cheese as occasional treats are fine.

It sounds like the food does not agree with her you might have to try another. My chihuahua has stinky gas sometimes too. She may have stomach ache. It might be due to the changes. Also that was very nice of you to save her, she will pay you back with love and gratitude. My vet recommended the dog food in the roll, pet bionics.

Esther's list of foods are good. You can feed her some plain yogurt every day to get her gut flora going.
You can also feed her a raw diet which will also eliminate the gas, she will have a great coat, cleaner teeth, and poop about 25% of what she will on cereal based foods. There is a lot of information on raw diets for dogs on the internet.

If you were fed such crappy food you'd be farting, too! What was the shelter feeding her? They should have told you so you could feed her what she's used to then gradually transition her to a better quality food (if they weren't feeding her one) Purina is GARBAGE. It's main ingredient is corn and corn meal and it contains "animal digest" - look it up - it isn't pretty. Rule of thumb - if you can find the pet food at a grocery store or WalMart it's definitely not something you should be putting in your pet!

Change the food, for God's sake and your sake too. Canned food will give her the farts it gives all dogs the farts, you're lucky she is a small dog. Can you imagine what a big dog's farts smell like? I have a big dog I cook him food, rice, chicken(deboned, never give a dog chicken bones they splinter) and mix cream of chicken soup together. Healthy dog no farts and he loves me for taking my time out to cook his supper just like the family.

I'm thinking it's the canned food that caused her to do that. I'm not sure if small dogs take certain kinds of canned food well. (( You're lucky. My dog got diareah when I fed him canned food. ))
There ARE some gas-relieving "treats" you can buy from PetCo or PetSmart, I believe. I used to have some because my dog found it fun to eat grass. Not sure of the brand though, sorry.
