Is there any product that actually repels fleas on dogs?We are in Fla, and the fleas are bad here. I have even treated the yard, and nothing seems to work. I have also used frontline on our dogs, that didn't work. I am resorting to bathing an Akita, and German Shepard once a week, and that is an all day job and back breaking. They both hate a bath, and are pretty much indoor dogs.

So we went over to a couple's home (hubby's friend's house) and they had a black lab that was about two years old. We walked in and met the dog and he seemed friendly, as he was wagging his tail. As the evening progressed, I got really uncomfortable. The friendly dog would go up to you and bark loudly at you over and over again until you pet him. If you ignored him for a split second he would whine, bark, and nudge you to get you to pet him. Don't get me wrong I love dogs and don't mind petting them but I couldn't even hold a conversation! I had to focus my attention on him or else be barked at and nudged. His owners didn't even say anything to him, they just said 'oh he likes attention' and laughed. I really wanted to say 'no' to the dog and try to get him to stop, but I didn't want to seem rude so I just kept giving in. Did I do the right thing? What would you have done?

I have a 1 year old cocker spaniel lab X. She was downstairs with my Mum in the garage on Monday night and when Tilly came upstairs she was limping and not putting any weight on her back right paw.

As far as we know, she didn't actually do anything to herself and she wasn't whimpering or acting like she was in pain. I checked her pads for a cut but there was nothing. I felt her toe joints and one was a bit squishy. We took her to the vet today (it was the earliest they could see her)

The vet had a look and said that he's pretty sure she's broken the squishy joint. He couldn't fit her in for an Xray at the time but she's going in tomorrow.

Can fractures just happen like this? My Mum was with her the whole time and she said she didn't see her hurt herself.

My mom is planning on getting a dog but we don't know which to choose from. We're looking for an easy to take care of breed. Short-haired for instance...

Big but friendly type of dog...

Gracie is four months old today. She is a chi-weenie (Chihuahua and Dachshund mix). We have tried the drops that you topicaly apply as a line from the neck down the back to the top of the torso (like the advantage). We have tried flea and tic powder and shampoos. I have treated carpets furniture, bedding and our other dog and two cats. They are fine but Gracie is still irritated by these fleas. She is not covered in them but it makes my feel bad that she is scratching this often at all. She sleeps with us at night and I have only had a few bites my husband none. Maybe it is not as bad as I feel but they are visible when you turn her on her back to rub her tummy you seem to se a few, every time. I also tried diluted Tea-Tree oil but that caused irritation. Thanks to all ~Dezi~

Is driving me totally up the wall. He's 11 years old, and for the first 10 years of his life, he was a pretty independent animal. He still acts like he did when he was 3, and shows absolutely no signs of tiring out. But in the past few months, he's developed some strange habits that have me up from 3 to 5 am tending to his every whim. Every day at 2:30-3 am, he'll wake me up whining and barking to go outside. I let him out, and he walks to the end of the porch, sniffs around for a while, then returns to come back in. When I let him in the house, he insists on going downstairs (you need to wrap your arms around him and drag him into the rest of the house, which is separated by a swinging door), and I usually let him and go back to bed. Half an hour later, he's barking downstairs to go out again, where he repeats the sniffing air thing. When he comes in next, he consents to be let in the main house. This continues for the next two-three hours. What on earth is going on?

ok. about my chiuhua. i did carry him to the vet. because he was sick, vomitting, and wouldnt eat or drink. when i took him to the vet they gave him fluid because he was dehydrated. they said they would be able to determine if it was parvo if the vomitting continued, and if there was blood in his poo. they gave me some amoxi drops to give him for 7 days, twice daily. also too after they gave him the fluids he ate alot, like he normally would, then when it wore off he was back sick again. . they also gave me a wormer to give to him the next day. . he hasnt thrown up since, and that has been like 3 days ago. and there is no sign of blood in his poo. he is drinking some, not as much as he normally would. and he still will not eat. only time was last night he ate a lil bit of bologna. when he does eat, its a bite of too and thats it. b4 he got sick i noticed he would scratch alot. and he doesnt have fleas, ticks etc. he is still sick, and gettin weaker. he is goin back to the vet tomorrow.

My vet acted like we should be thankful that she is still with us and he was not concerned with the moles she had at that time but they have multiplied and gotten larger? Any thoughts or experiences? I have a 3 yr old golden retriever named Honey. I'm the one who basically takes the most care of her, I play with her, feed her, take her for walks, train her, etc. and she's always been good to me. However lately, when I bring her in the house, if I get within a foot of her she'll growl and/or show all her teeth at me! She looks like a wolf! I don't understand WHY she is doing this to ME! She spends the majority of her days outside and she NEVER does it to me out there, but when she's inside she does it! It used to be that she'd only do it when she'd be chewing on a bone and I'd go to pet her, which is reasonable I guess, but today more than ever I noticed that she just did it whenever I tried to pet her! I mean I NEVER hit her or mistreated her, and neither has anyone in my family! She doesn't do it to my parents, she sometimes does it to my sister, but it's ME that she does it the most to. Anyone have a clue why? How can I get her to stop? I don't want her to bite me or something!

i have a 4 1/2 month old chiuhua .. he is so sick and want eat, he drinks some. but not as much as he normally would. i took him to the vet and they gave him some amoxi drops, for me to give him for 7 days, twice daily. its not helpin and he's still not eating. he is nothing but bones now, because he want eat. what can i do to make him eat. there's no point of me takin him to the doc. because they will say the same thing, and tell me to continue giving him his amoxi drops. i have checked his poo poo ( sorry tmi ) and there is no blood in it. and he's not throwing up, he just want eat, and when he does its like a bite of something and thats all. what do i do? and what could be wrong? this puppy completely has my heart and i dont want to loose him. what is some ways i can boost his energy up to make him move around, instead of sleeping all day?? .. something please!!!

How come people suggest a dog breed if you don't even know the person asking the question?
How do you know what kind of dog the asker would like if you don't even know them?
How can you tell a complete stranger what kind of dog to get?
You don't know them or their lifestyle or what they would want in a dog so why suggest to someone a dog breed when you don't know them?

I have seen people suggest pom-a-shedders when people ask for a non-shedding dogs. I don't understand why people would suggest pomeranians when they shed a lot actually.

Like I said how can anyone suggest to someone a dog breed when you don't even know the person asking the question.

The best answer to give would be: Do research on the breed that best fits you, research energy level, size, exercise requirements, how much the dog sheds, grooming requirements..ect. Take some time and read online and get library books about akc's different breeds and see which ones interest you and fit your wants in a dog best

Hey guys,
I'm considering fostering a dog for a local rescue (I haven't decided which one yet, but am looking into the CT Humane Society and Hot Water Rescue (hotwaterrescue.com). I know this is something I want to do, but it is a long time coming. I'm in the middle of learning to train my own dog (a 3 1/2 year old rescued Border Collie) but really want to put these skills to greater use once I have them down!

Really, the first step here is to convince my parents to allow me to do this, but I think it will be an easy sell once I've got everything down with the BC. What I'm really looking for is some personal experience stories from other fosters. Please share any and all information!

Thanks in advance!

Today I hugged my dog and my neck happened to be pressed against his flea collar. I already wiped my neck with a wet paper towel twice. Is this enough or do I have to rinse my neck for 15-20 minutes? Or should I hose my neck down? I need to know if I'll be alright.
