My dog is a Lab mix but his claws are brown and black.

Do they get their color from the breed or is it from pigment?

My other dog is a rottie mix and she has black claws but the hair by her claws is light tan.

My lab mix's hair by his claws is a yellow.

His pads are black!

but his nails are brown and black.

I do try to keep them clipped.

He also has white tips on his nails.

He was born with white tips on his nails! Its was cute!

I guess I did answer my own question.

but I thought it was from something else. Guess not!

I think it would be pigment at different dogs have different colored nails. Some dogs have different colored nails on the same foot. It's more to do with the hair color next to the nail. White hair usually means pink nail. And dark hair usually means dark nails. Or for is it just dirt :)

If you have a look at his pads they are probably the colour of the claws.

Our dog has one foot with clear and black nails - one nail is even both colours. The foot that this is one has blotchy pink and blacks pads.

The color is from a pigment that is controlled by genetics.
