We took him to the vet and there is nothing wrong, he had one or two ageing problems but he is ok now. He barks when we are at home and when we are away. We take him for a walk, we do all the things just as we did before but he still barks!! this has been going on for 2 weeks now. We can`t put him in the house or have him loose in the yard, he is aggressive and got out and beaten someone a few years back

Who would put a dog to sleep because it is barking?!
Take it to a vet and see if it has any disabilities developing due to age, like hearing or sight impairment that could be causing it discomfort and making it bark.
Have there been any changes in your dog's environment recently. It sounds a lot like a separation anxiety, does this happen when you are out or at home, or both?
Is this new behavior? Have you always owned this dog? What were the circumstances under which the barking developed?

Dogs dont bark for no reason....you just said it yourself he barks when people are walking up the stairs , sounds he is protecting his home and doesnt want anybody sneaking up on his owner. I feel bad for the neighbors though because this is a behavior that can be stopped if the owner had any consideration because when dogs hear common sounds they can be taught to ignore certain sounds and only pay attention to other types of sounds such as someone at the door or window rather than people just walking by or walking up and down the stairs.

Hey I had that dog, I gave it away!
Are you the truck driver that got it from the rescue?
Honestly, talk to your vet. Your dog is older and may be in pain. There may be something really wrong there. On the other hand, it may be just a pain in the @ss old dog with and attitude. Perhaps he is finally fed up with your neighbors and is giving them back a taste of their own medicine! LOL
I would take him to the vet and make sure there is nothing medically wrong with him. If he is clear, then maybe it is time to think about finding him a new home.
Good Luck!

He might be hyperactive without any outlet to his energy . Also , he might have been abused when he was a puppy. If you create an outlet , like frisbee playing , a long walk like 5 kms everyday , it migt help .
I would also address this question to Armin Winkler , living In Virginia , who reads dogs like on other I have known . His email address is armin@schutzhundvillage.com . He would try and help you if he could diagnose the root-cause of this behaviour . He is very knowledgeable about dog behaviour

He's lonely outside all day long. Let him live in the house.

Put him to sleep! Because he barks, I hope you do not do that. He just wants attention, so give it to him he is your dog you owe it to him. Please do not put him to sleep because he barks!

bring him inside where he wants to be. Dogs are pack animals, no solitary animals for back yards.
