I have a 1 year old cocker spaniel lab X. She was downstairs with my Mum in the garage on Monday night and when Tilly came upstairs she was limping and not putting any weight on her back right paw.

As far as we know, she didn't actually do anything to herself and she wasn't whimpering or acting like she was in pain. I checked her pads for a cut but there was nothing. I felt her toe joints and one was a bit squishy. We took her to the vet today (it was the earliest they could see her)

The vet had a look and said that he's pretty sure she's broken the squishy joint. He couldn't fit her in for an Xray at the time but she's going in tomorrow.

Can fractures just happen like this? My Mum was with her the whole time and she said she didn't see her hurt herself.

I agree with the poster who said maybe Tilly hurt her paw before and has hurt it more.I'm glad you took her to the vet and that is the best thing you could do.It is possible that she hurt herself in the garage and it went unnoticed. The reason I say this is that even when we carefully supervise children they can still have accidents.Realistically we don't just hover over them we give them a little space.Even in our eyesight they can still have accidents. This would be a good question to ask the vet.Do animals have calcium deficiencies, osteoporosis, health problems due to breed that put them at risk etc ? Larger dogs are prone to certain medical problems due to their size but that is not to say that is the case here.Ask your vet when you talk to him/her. I hope Tilly will be well soon. Take care.

When a wound oozes it is obvious you have an infection, you should have taken care of long ago ! This can poison the blood of the animal making it in PAIN and unwell ! Get to the VETS and do something about it ! If someone cut you once or twice in your foot with a knife and left it to ROT AND Left you in Pain for a few weeks ! HOW Do you think you would be feeling ? Please do something for the poor animal. And make its area more secure and give it lots of love , it will respond much better a thousand times.

Aw poor wee thing, perhaps after the vet has done the xrays he will be able to tell you the type of accident that may have caused the injury.

Paws don't just break, so she must have had an accident that your mother didn't see, after all she can't have been watching Tilly the whole time.

No,it won't just break like that, not on a dog that old. The culprit is most likely your very own mum. She may have stepped on the paw by accident, or she did it on purpose. Either way she is covering up her involvement in this matter.

It is possible that she had previously broken it but it was aligned, thus not really causing much pain, she could have moved wrong and caused the break to collapse, which caused her the pain.

Hi Wabby, She could have tripped and broke her toe. You Mom just didn't see her trip. She should be better in no time.

Maybe she injured her paw previously and it's gotten worse just by walking around.
