I want a sheltie, but our landlord doesn't want us to get a herding dog because he thinks it will chase his cows. I know they have strong herding instincts, but would a sheltie chase cows(they were originally bred in Scotland for sheep) and if they did couldn't they be trained?? I think he has this breed mixed up with the border collie and cow herding type dogs. Help!!

I have a 2.5 female rat terrier. She has fresh blood in her stool. I took her to our regular vet, they did tests, got samples, adn said everything is normal. She is very high strung, skiddish, and nervous. She has been with me since a puppy, never got whacked and still scrunches down when I go near her at first. The regular vet said it is from stress. It has been happening on and off for months. We just got a new puppy, and it got worse. I am going to a new vet Tuesday. Anyone have any experience with this? What else could it be?

I posted a question regarding dog food and why pedigree was a bad choice I could not undestand, well now I do.Ican,t believe the crap I have been feeding my sweet dogs.( I already apologized to them :o) .I checked out good options thanks to a lot of great links there were given to me.Tomorrow I will buy the solid gold brand it has 6 stars and no fillers .However can both of my dog,s be on the same diet ? ( I have a 50lbs labmix and a 7lbs yorkie ) I trust you guys more , before I ask somebody at Petco they the ones that recomended Pedigree and I never knew about those terrible fillers ( aarrrrrrgh ) All you pet lovers out there please let me know. Thank you soooooo much !!!! Nic : o)

Somebody listed this as part of an answer regarding a mouse. I am a biologist that studies mice, and I have never heard of this. Why would it cause pancreatitis?

Through artificial selection of dog breeding, is it possible to create a dog breed with a striped coat similar to a zebra or tiger? If so, what would be the best breed(s) to start with?
A note to all the PETA fanatics: I dont plan on doing this as it would result in lots of puppies without homes. This is purely hypothetical, and I understand it would take many generations, so it would be dumb to try anyway. (i.e. I dont need any lectures)

We live in the country, so it's not going to be around that many people, and I was wondering if all rottweilers are really as crazy as they show them on television and stuff. Are those just extreme cases, or are rottweilelers really like that. Any information would help, thank you.

Give a general definition.

List some tools a positive trainer would use.

List some tools a positive trainer would not use if there are any.

Give some examples of famous or well-known positive dog trainers if you know any.

Any additional thoughts?

I used to take my Husky mix (50lbs) to the park daily. She is very well adjusted and loves to play with other dogs and people.

A little over a month ago a German Shepherd attacked her and 2 other dogs at the dog park unprovoked. There wasn't any damage done to her physically, just psychologically apparently. She now hates German Shepherds.

If I take her to the park and there are no GSs, she plays with the other dogs and people and seems to have fun.

If I take her to the park and there IS a GS, she is very on edge for a minute or two then gets aggressive and growls ant every dog that comes near her. I immediately pull her out and take her home.

What’s the best way to get her back into the swing of things with GSs? I take her there to sniff and greet them, but after a minute or two she becomes very defensive no matter how calm the GSs are.

Note before the question, please save mine and your time and don't tell me its cruel. I think it will be more humane than having my puppy choke herself every time we walk
Now for the question
I have a 6 month old Dobie puppy. She is in obedience class right now. She is a smart girl overall but she pulls when we walk and jumps on people. She pulls so hard that she chokes herself. We have been training her to walk to leash and no jump on people since she has been 2 month (when we got her), but she gets 2 excited around new people and new things and seems to forget everything she has learned. We use a harness and its not much help. I am starting to consider a prong collar. I have used in before on an older dog so i am not sure if its appropriate for a puppy. Would it be ok to use on her or should i keep at it for a couple more month?

I've heard that large dogs, with deep chests, can suffer from "bloat" or "Gastric Torsion".
Can someone tell me a little more about the causes of this and ways to avoid it please?

I love the breeds I have- Papillon and Siberian Husky. However, I'm always toying with the question of what breed the next dog I get will be.

I know this is going to sound silly... (I always scoff at those who don't want a dog who sheds, as I have a Husky)...but I can't really get over some superficial misgivings I have about some large breeds- the drool, the amount of food necessary and the size of the poop. I'm sure I could get over these things after a little while though.

To those of you who have, have had or have worked with giant breeds, what are the "pros" and "cons" of the breed you've experienced?

I'm very interested in Saints, but will consider other breeds- not so interested in Bernese Mountain dogs.

My son is 8 and wants to go see our very old and very sick dog put down at the vet tonight. This dog has been with our family since before my son was born.

Farm kids live with this kind of stuff so I figured maybe my son can handle it too. We are city people though. However, he has seen on Little House on the Prairie that when the horse got injured Pa had to shoot it. He has also seen chickens get their head cut off and cooked (on Kid Nation TV show). He saw the Little House where Pa was going to shoot the Racoon and their dog, Jack because he may have had rabies.

He has seen our Aunt get really sick and detoriate and die from ALS. He saw her up until the very end of her life and he has been to several wakes.

He really wants to go and I don't want to hold him back. My husbands mom held him back from his grandmas wake and funeral when he was a young boy and he was begging to go. To this day, he is kind of mad about it. I don't want my son to be mad at me for not letting him go
