There are certain breeds which are striped already. This pattern is known as "Brindle". I have seen it in Boxers and Staffies. I owned a brindle staff and her name was Bengal because of her stripes like a Bengal tiger. She had this combination of black and different shades of brown stripes running vertically all over her. A very interesting look.

I am sure if someone wanted to try to breed for that it could be done, the problem with breeding for a specific pattern and color in a dog is that you can lose important structure and soundness. In the German Shepherd breed there used to be brindles. The panda Shepherds came about through a dominant mutation in one litter of pups. That breeder kept that pup and bred for the pattern. Now these dogs are being sold for a bunch of money just because of the pattern!! They can not be registered as what they are. I seriously doubt that the GSDCA will ever change the breed standard to include this pattern. I don't care for them myself!

don't think there is a way to breed zebra type stripes..
a brindle is as good as it gets...
are their any breeds that have a dun type factor like horses? Trying to picture one with that as well and cannot...
Forsaken~~~~
an interesting fact about the brindle horses..they are in fact a twin in themselves...they discovered this when someone bred a brindle stud to a brindle mare...the mare and stud owner sent in DNA on the parents...the stallion owners DNA was rejected because it was female DNA...later they thoroughly tested both horses and found that both in fact had 2 different DNA's and in this case both had male and female DNA...although it could have been same sex DNA...so... with this the brindle color will not be produced just because of having 2 parents that carry the gene...it is not a gene it is an abnormality
in horses brindle only comes from one twin absorbing another

It might be, if you started with a bunch of brindles.
Note: I am very much against BYBs, puppy mills, and casual breeding in general. That does not make me a PETA fanatic. If it came down to being able to get rid of all BYBs, and get rid of PETA, I would keep the BYBs. If you understand the mission of PETA, you would know that in their world, you would not be able to own a dog, and nobody would be allowed to breed dogs, period.

As others have mentioned a brindle is about as close to a striped dog as you will find. Several breeds have brindles as a standard(acceptable) color and chihuahua is one of them. I have a brindle chi named Tessa.

Add: Slightly off topic, I just found some really beautiful pictures of brindled horses.:D I haven't found any black and white brindles yet, although I bet it's possible.
