Does anyone have any advise on what breed? I was thinking of toy poodle, but they are SO expensive! I need a kind of dog that is really sweet, and not to pricey.

Many of the small breeds are very high-energy (I have a Jack Russell terrier), which means if you don't entertain them a certain amount every day, they'll entertain themselves [disaster]. People say the Cavalier King Charles spaniels are sweet & passive, but they are way expensive. Ditto French bulldogs, also a very trendy breed.
The greyhound is a large breed that is a total couch potato. Smaller racing dogs are whippets and Italian greyhounds - they are a little more active than the big ones, but not as wired as a terrier and all these are available thru used racedog associations.
If you're willing to adopt a mixed-breed, you can get one from a shelter. Be sure it's at least 8 months old so the adult size is predictable.

We have miniature Daschund named Georgi, such a cutie. They are very loyal and loving dogs who don't bark much and love your attention. Georgi is a purebred and is 15 months old and she costed about $600 but that is with papers, but a purebred puppy with papers is about $1000 and up. So they can be expensive but if you are looking for a mini daschund who isn't purebreed then they are about $300 or $400 mark. Some times it is better to get an older dog rather than a puppy. We have had Georgi for only a couple of weeks and she hardly barks, never pee's or poo's in the house, doesn't rip anything up (like most puppies do) She is a lovely dog and doesn't grow very big at all, though if you live in a two story house and the dog will be going up and down the stairs then a mini daschund isn't for you (because the stairs can hurt their back) I hope this helps. Also Mini pomeranians are great but they tend to bark a lot.

The question really is, what characteristics do you want in a dog? Are you prepared for grooming costs every 60 days or so? (if no, then that eliminates poodles, shih tzus, lhasa apsos, bichons, and other long coated breeds that require grooming).

Do you want an active dogs that requires a lot of exercise? (if no, then that may eliminate a number of the terrier breeds).

Are you prepared for special care? (if no, then that eliminates the doxies as they need special consideration to keep their backs healthy).

These are just examples, but I think you get it.

You need to find out WHAT you are looking for in a dog... then you will get the appropriate breed, and the dog will be well taken care of.

Define better what you are looking for and why and I think you will receive better and certainly more appropriate responses.

Pomeranians are really good. I've had two... They will crack you up the way they jump WAY up in the air...
They aren't otragiously expensive, but it will cost you. I got mine for about 400... (ouch)
They have a good disposition and are very fast learners...
ONE problem, this isn't a dog for anyone living in an apartment or anyone that will leave their dog alone for long periods of time... they bark A LOT. My dog barks if ANYONE enters a room and they are VERY needy...always wanting attention and to be held....

Another good one is minidaschunds (see above)

or Yorkies... I personally have not had one but I know they don't cost too much....

Chiuahas are good unless you have children or other animals... I sort of brought one home on a trial basis... it only lasted about 3 weeks because he was afraid of everyone and everything... I tried another and it was the same.... it's in the breed... very shakey, nervous dogs and they generally have health problems *seizures.... (more expenses)

Good luck in the search. I hope you find one that's right for you....

I have a black n white schnoodle and he weighs 6 pounds( 7 months). Schnoodles are very loving n caring and are very very good with children and other dogs, If you were thinking about a toy poodle some schnoodles are mixed with a toy Schnauzer and a toy poodle like mine... I think they are the perfect choice..... They are also very smart 2!

Take a look at your local Humane Society or Animal Shelter. Mixed breeds can be adorable, and you know that you're saving a life. Plus, the adoption fee (at least in this area) is about $25 to cover the license and shots.

Boston Terrier and French Bulldogs are both great little dogs but are not cheap. If you are looking for something cheap, you should probably visit your local animal shelter and get a nice mutt who'll love you like there's no tomorrow.
