I have a 2.5 female rat terrier. She has fresh blood in her stool. I took her to our regular vet, they did tests, got samples, adn said everything is normal. She is very high strung, skiddish, and nervous. She has been with me since a puppy, never got whacked and still scrunches down when I go near her at first. The regular vet said it is from stress. It has been happening on and off for months. We just got a new puppy, and it got worse. I am going to a new vet Tuesday. Anyone have any experience with this? What else could it be?

My dog is very high stress, and high energy. Not sure what from. I have a male that is 5 and he was there before her and always has been dominant. He may have added to her skiddishness. My dogs are excercised daily with walks int he morning and throughout the day. They are healthy, and actually the regular vet told me that she was in perfect health. The new puppy is actually 10 months old, and my females skiddishness and timidness has actually improved, there is just blood in the stool.

Yes, my puppy had it. Everything turned out fine with doctors help. She was just constipated and it hurt her so she bled....
But its most likely stress related.

Glad to know your going to a new vet.

Dogs can develop ulcers just as people can. Usually a blood test will show anemia with an active bleed. You might want to start getting your dog out and walking it more. Nervous, high energy dogs need more exercise to get rid of the tension they experience. A long walk of an hour or more a day will help drain off some of the energy and help calm her. Bringing in a puppy was a mistake. You already had an unbalanced dog and you've brought in another before she was stable. This will only further unbalance her and perhaps create a problem in the new puppy as well. I'd suggest exercise, exercise, exercise. Walking with her by your side and not in front at a brisk rate. I think you'll see an improvement in her in no time. The puppy will have to wait until it's had at least it's first set of shots before going out in public, and then you can add him or her to the walk as well.

OK. If you had fresh blood at the end of your stool...and you were dragging YOUR bottom across the carpet.... ...would you log on to Yahoo! Answers and ask for help? Or would you consult with a professional? Call you dog's vet for goodness sake.

If there is blood in her poop then there is a problem. If your vet is saying nothing is wrong then I suggest taking her to a different vet and getting a second opinion. Generally fresh blood in fecal matter indicates there is intestinal bleeding. Also your dog is only 2.5lbs, she doesn't have a lot of blood to lose. Is she acting weak or lethargic?

New puppy = more stress. You should consider taking her to a behaviorist to socialize her more and lessen her anxiety. I'm afraid that getting another dog may not have been a good choice with such an anxious, poorly acclimated little dog.

It could be stress. I know when I board my german shepherd she usually end up passing blood in her stool, due to the stress of being at the kennel. Once she is back home, she's fine.

it can be stress, absolutely. a new dog is a real trial for some new dogs. why does your dog "scrunch down" when you greet her? please explain why you believe that happened...

i would get a second opinion, but, frankly, not sure i would have gotten a second dog if your original dog is that fragile, behaviorally.

In humans, the commonest cause of fresh blood in the stool is hemorrhoids. This is harmless though sometimes irritating. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same with dogs.
