I have both inside dogs and outside dogs. I think they can be either, as long as you give them what they need in terms of physical environment and interaction.

I think both - my dog (australian cattle dog) stays outside when I am at work, and when I am home, he is able to come inside when he wants. But I set strict boundaries before I trained him to come inside, quiet time is inside time - no game playing, there are certain rooms in the house he knows are off limits, and he knows he can't get on the lounge.
I believe my dog is part of the family, and thus, he should be allowed inside to hang out with us, but should have outside time, to do dog things.

I think it depends on the dog. And the family. And I agree that no dog should be strictly outside, unless you live on a farm with a barn. Or in a mild climate.

I have a big sissy Dalmatian that would NEVER survive outside. She has thin hair, freezes in the winter and LITERALLY gets sunburn in the summer if I'm not careful. My parents had a Husky for 15 years. He HATED the house in the winter - it was too hot. He slept in the snow with his head buried under his tail. In the summer, he slept inside in front of the AC vent.

Pay attention to your dogs needs and they will tell you where they want to be :)

Okay, I will get a lot of thumbs down for this, but I see nothing wrong with having outside dogs, but not the toy sized dogs. Their bodies are not conditioned to live outside. We have chihuahuas and they are mostly in the house but do have a doggy door with access to a large fenced in area and go out whenever they please. We also have 2 lab/heeler mixes that would absolutely go nutzo if left inside. These 2 dogs are very healthy, happy dogs that enjoy their freedom. They also have a fenced in area that is seperate from the chihuahuas fenced yard. These 2 dogs are our guardians, our protectors and they take their jobs very seriously. Dogs have been bred for hundreds, even thousands of years for doing certain jobs and most of those jobs are done outside. People are taking away their heritage and the dogs do not have a clue as to what they were born to do. Of course there are still dogs used for herding, hunting, guarding, etc. But more are just lazy, bored dogs who stay in the house with nothing to do. I love all dogs but I do think there are dogs that should be inside dogs and those that should be outside dogs.

Depends.
If you want the dog as part of the family, treat it as one, open the door and let it in.
If it's a working dog then probably outside with all the comforts of home.
I had a inside dog, never settled unless it was outside.

I don't believe in leaving a dog outside 24/7. I've seen and heard about too many things that can and do happen. If a dog is outside during the day, enjoys being outside and is given all it's needs IE, interaction, exercise, shelter, food, water, toys etc. That's fine. I personally do not leave my dog out unless I am able to keep an eye/ear out for him.

I absolutely do not agree with keeping a dog outdoors on a permanent basis. Why have a dog? It is fine to let them play outside for a couple of hours but that is it. Would you want to bake in the sun in the summer and get eaten alive by mosquitoes or freeze in the winter. If you don't want the dog to be inside don't get a dog.

Dogs are pack animals, and so they are very social. For that reason, they belong inside with their human families, unless they have to do their business, in which case they belong outside until they are finished, and then they can come back inside.

Well, I think dogs should be let inside instead of being strictly outside dogs, but as long as the dog is properly taken care of, then I guess it's fine for them to be outside. I feel better having my dogs inside with me though, especially during winter and summer (crazy Texas weather!). They do spend a lot of time outdoors though, as we have fenced in property for them to explore.

I feel that dogs should live in the house. They do need to go out to go to the bathroom and play but as far as sleeping and living goes my dogs sleep inside. No dog deserves to be tied up outside all day and all night.
