My dog is 10.5 years old. He suffered from spinecore disease 18 months ago and lost use of back legs. We gave him hydrotherapy and massage etc. But, his back legs never come back. My vet said that he'll not walk again and suggested us to put down. His charactor seems the same as before but certainly lost the enjoyment of moving around. He struggle to walk with front legs whilst I use back herness to hold his bottom. He has to drug his back legs when he wants to move about in the house. We bought wheel chairs 3 months ago but he doesn't like using them. He also has a problem with toilet. He can't urinate by himself well, so I need to express his bladder. He's bowel is very weak. We think he doesn't have any nerve around there as he doesn't know when he is pooing. It comes out at anytime of the day. He realises once it's out, then suddenly he moves away from it. Sometimes he druggs it with his back legs which makes terrible stains to our floors!

I know that puppies get excited but this is getting out of hand. She's not aggressive when she barks. We've tried distracting her with a squeaky toy which does work outside but not when people come into house. Anyone got any tips we could try??

Please don't get me wrong, I love my dog very much, but I just don't know what to do! I adopted a dog last year (he's a Great Dane mix, Huge, and is about 16 months old).. At the time, my husband and I were working opposite schedules and one of us was home most the time. I changed jobs recently and now we both work graveyard and aren't home very much.. We live in an apartment, and my dog chews a ton, so we have to crate him when we are gone.. Most nights, he has to be in the kennel for 10 hours.. When we get home, we take him for walks and to the dog park and stuff, but he has really high puppy energy and it never seems to be enough. He goes to doggy daycare 1 day per week, and that helps, but I can't afford to take him everyday. When we go to sleep, we have to put him back in the crate so he won't chew everything.. I worry that I am being unfair to him because he is crated so long and so often. I am seriously thinking about giving him away when I move next month.. What would you do?

It's been a very long time since i've had a puppy and i'd really like to know if i'm doing the right thing. I was always told to tap a puppy on the nose but is that still the best thing to do?

I have an 8 month old black Miniature Schnauzer and she pulls so hard when I walk her that I don't want to walk her anymore. I've gotten her a headcollar and that seems to help but she doesn't like it and tries to paw it off. We will enroll both our dogs in obedience classes but because of vacation we are going to do it after. Any suggestions would be great!

I have 2 female sisters and a newcomer male. One of the females has befriended the male and they fight together against the bigger sister dog. When the mom was around, she was dominant over the other 3 dogs. She sadly passed and now the hierarchy has been broken, no dominance has been established. It used to be just the 2 sisters fighting, but now it is just disaster when they fight. It really scares the rest of my family and it has become almost impossible to break them up.

I would like to know how to show that I am dominant over all of them, or just some way to make it so one is dominant without anymore fighting.

Any other tips are very much welcome. Water does not break them up, neither does hitting on the butt area. I have to pull them apart myself, the dogs have never bit me while doing this.

I have a 1 year old golden retriever, just a few minutes ago he started hacking like something was caught in his throat. He ended up throwing up about 3 or 4 times. I know he doesn't have kennel cough either because he just recently had his bordatella (sp?) shot.

After he gets sick, he tries to eat things off of the floor.

It's 1:30 in the morning so I can't take him to the vet. PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm going to adpoting a puppy and i'm getting him later this week, i've never had a dog, i have a couple of questions like how many times a day does he need a walk, and for how long? how often should you bath your dog? he is a chihuahua/dachshund mix, so he is small.

Sometimes my dog comes into the house with rocks and flowers and dirt and tree branches and my parents always get mad at it because it gets the house dirty. My dad hits my dog to punish him but that doesnt seem to work. Neither does yelling at it. He always reacts by barking at us and biting us and it hurts like hell. What should i do?

My 2 year old labrador has always had hip issues. When he was a newborn puppy he could walk. The vet told us that his femur was underdeveloped. However, he did walk but was a very late bloomer. Now he is limping badly. He cannot put any pressure on his leg. But he will let me touch it. Is it hip displasia or something worse?

Back in August of 2006 our little boxer died of parvo. We got Rocket from a neighbors friend that had him and didnt want him. He was up to date on shots. Soon after getting him(less than 2 weeks) he got sick and he died of parvo. We were all very crushed and our family especially our boys misses him to this day. We found out later he picked up the virus from the apartments the other people resided in. We would LOVE to get a new pup but we dont know if its safe here. We really dont want to take the chance. When would it be safe to bring a dog into our home? We are military so we move alot. Would it be safe for us to get a new Boxer on our next move? Or is it still too risky? We have bleached and disinfected everything. We are so sad and want a dog badly but absolutey do not want to risk losing another pup. Thank you.

My mom is finally letting me get a puppy this year ( I'm 11). She is going to have everyone help out with the puppy but I am going to be the owner. I was planning on getting a Weimaraner. I've done research about the breed but does anyone have experience with them? If so, would you recommend that they be in a house with regularly visiting children 3 and 5? They are very active children and enjoy playing outside with our 1 1/2 year old altered female American White Shepherd who is VERY friendly towards all living things except for small and furries. Lol. If you have a Weimaraner or know someone with one, what brand and type of food do they feed it and are they happy with the results? I was thinking of getting Royal Canin. Is this food any good?
I am also open to other breed suggestions and food suggestions. We have a large house that the dogs would live in with a 1-2 acre yard and a little dog agility set. Lol. We may move to a house with even more space and a pool with near 2-3 acres.

I always love seemingly amazing stories of the sense of understanding and protection a dog can offer. Here's an article of interest:

I have been taking her temp. twice a day for the last week. Her temp was reading 100.1 to 100.4 for days then I took her temp. this morning and it was 101.3 but to night it was only 99.2 is she close to delivery or is her temp. just flexuating? is taking the temp. the most acurate way to tell if she's going into labor or is there a better way to be able to tell if she's going to have the puppies?

The vet said 1/4 cup 3 times a day, but he always seems hungry, and it doesn't seem like it fills him up.

We feed him beneful, which I know is not a good dog food. It's what the breeder was feeding him, I'll switch his food within the next month.

I got a new shih tzu puppy 2 weeks ago. She is 4 months old. She will only go outside to the bathroom if I stand out there with her. If I try to walk back inside she runs to the door and stands there until I let her in. At some point I would like to be able just let her outside by herself. Kind of time consuming to stand outside and wait for her everytime she needs to go. How do I get her to go outside by herself?

First off, we are in Vietnam and have no access to a Vet. One of our 4 dogs has been foaming at the mouth but not continuously. She is not being vicious and is still taking water. The question is... When a dog has rabies are the symptoms intermitent, are there periods where the dog will appear back to normal? or is it just total dimentia from the get go and continuous frothing from the mouth and attacking anything within reach? I was actually bitten by this dog about three weeks ago and it drew blood. Not the dogs fault. The dog was stepped on by accident and just snaped at the offending foot. We need answers here. please help.

Female shih-tsu, 15 lbs. We were gone and she went into the pantry and retrieved a box of Betty Crocker Brownie mix, opened it, ate all the mix and the all chocolate fudge syrup.

So...
(A) Take her to the vet! She's gonna die!
(B) Put the brownies up higher next time.
(C) You are so cruel to your dog, you shouldn't have one!
(D) They say chocolate is bad for dogs, but the dog disagrees.

Or an essay will be fine.
