Back in August of 2006 our little boxer died of parvo. We got Rocket from a neighbors friend that had him and didnt want him. He was up to date on shots. Soon after getting him(less than 2 weeks) he got sick and he died of parvo. We were all very crushed and our family especially our boys misses him to this day. We found out later he picked up the virus from the apartments the other people resided in. We would LOVE to get a new pup but we dont know if its safe here. We really dont want to take the chance. When would it be safe to bring a dog into our home? We are military so we move alot. Would it be safe for us to get a new Boxer on our next move? Or is it still too risky? We have bleached and disinfected everything. We are so sad and want a dog badly but absolutey do not want to risk losing another pup. Thank you.

Wait till you move and wash and disenfect everything you are taking very, very thouroughly.

After that, then it could be safe to get a puppy, but if in doubt ask a vet.

Good luck!

I got a Beagle puppy that got sick the first night we had him. I took him to the vet the next day and he had Parvo. The vet said not to get another pup for 6 months as the virus can live that long. I had two other dogs that were up to date on their shots and neither got it. It has been almost a year so you place is safe from the virus.
By the way, I took the puppy back to the breeder and found out later the puppy survived as did the whole litter. I got another Beagle from the same breeder who is 4 years old now.

First of all, I need to say how sorry I am that you are going through this. It will depend on the contract you had with your breeder. And they (breeders) know this is possible so most times, the contract is full of loop holes and there is nothing you can do. Take it to an attorney for advice on how to proceed. I bought a dog from a breeder in Missouri and the puppy required a "well-puppy" exam within 72 hours of receipt. I got the exam, and emailed the breeder and when the dog contracted parvo 4-5 days later, I got nothing from the breeder but an email saying they were sorry but the dog was well when they sold it and the parvo could have come from the vets office as much as them. It is a nasty death and it cost me a $1500 in vet bills trying to keep the puppy alive in addition to the cost of the puppy and heartache.

Did you actually see the vaccination record? I would bet the "friends" were irresponsible and lied to you that the dog had its jabs to get you to take it. Ask your vet if it's possible for a vaccinated dog to still get parvo. If the answer is no, then that should set your mind at rest. Good luck with your new pup.

Parvo is like the flu. It doesn't matter where you live, a dog can get it anytime. Usually in the spring. The vet should be able to give your dog a vaccination for it.
