I always love seemingly amazing stories of the sense of understanding and protection a dog can offer. Here's an article of interest:

My dog amazes me. She can read people so well. She is a normal happy dog who loves to see everyone. When people come over or knock on the door she showers them with kisses. She never barks when something is going on during the day. But if there are noises outside in the middle of the night she is a different dog. She will bark, and warn us if someone is out there. I love her because she is so friendly and loving, but if there was ever a situation where I was threatened, or attacked, I know she would protect me. And that story about that Chihuahua was super cute!!

My 1 yrs old border collie is very shy and is intimidated easilly, but if there is ever someone who comes into our house without her knowing for sure it is one of the family, she growls and barks at them while advancing menacingly. When she realizes that we are friendly with this person and are comfortable around them she calms down.
