I love the look of 'blue' dogs (in general), but I don't believe it's an acceptable color in German Shepherds. Blue dogs are prone to alopecia and reputable breeders typically avoid the gene (recessive) in the breeds it affects. I'll try to find a link about the problem. (Edit: I'm not certain it applies to Shepherds...but it might.)

Here are a couple:

There's an element of truth in all the answers...as far as the colour being undesirable, well beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Whilst it's true that blue is not a colour that any respectable breeder would strive to achieve, she is your companion for the next 10 years or so and will repay your love one thousand per cent. She will never be a Crufts show winner (or any other KC/AKC run show for that matter) due to the fact that she is a blue, but in terms of appearence, I'm sure that she is as beautiful as any other GSD of whatever colour. I agree that, had you done your homework in the first instance, you would have been alerted to the fact that blue colour in the GSD is a major fault and with this in mind, I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you should never even consider breeding from her, indeed, when she is a little older, it would be wise to have her speyed. Good luck, and may you spend many happy years with your new companion.

The blue gene in the GSD's is a dilute color of black. Blue's are not desirable by reputable breeders. Blues will also have washed out pigment on their noses, they will have dilute color eyes as well. It is considered a major fault in the breed. You will not find a reputable breeder that breeds for blues or livers.

Bad breeding; violates standard for the breed. However, as a pet, who cares. She'll return you love in triplicate and GSDs are probably the easiest breed to train.

Honestly, I think it is a fancy term for smokey gray. But it is beautiful and desirable in some breeds. I love the blue merle look of the grayish-lavendar and grayish black spots. You see that a lot in some aussies or doxies.
