I'm going to adpoting a puppy and i'm getting him later this week, i've never had a dog, i have a couple of questions like how many times a day does he need a walk, and for how long? how often should you bath your dog? he is a chihuahua/dachshund mix, so he is small.

Assuming you are asking about walks & not "potty breaks", I would say if it's a new 8-12 wk puppy, you don't need to walk or bathe it for a while. Just playing & running in the yard will be enough exercise for the 1st few weeks - practice around your yard with the collar (or preferably a harness) & leash so it gets use to it. Generally, it's great to walk your dog every day, even if for a short distance. Dogs need exercise & it will help you & the pup to bond. As the puppy gets older, you can walk it farther & take it to a dog park for more exercise. Of course, potty breaks will be very often at 1st if it's a young puppy (like every hour or two).

Bathing depends on the breed, but the short hair dogs don't need baths very often. Unless it will sleep with you, I'd say to bath when it starts to get smelly or is dirty. If it sleeps with you, I'd say bathe it once a month (watch that you don't get water in its ears). Use special "puppy" shampoo because it doesn't burn their eyes & is not harsh on the puppy's fur. One groomer says you can use reg. baby shampoo, but I would go with the puppy product. Petedge.com has great prices on doggy items, including shampoos, leashes, collars, harnesses, beds, crates, etc. Good luck with your new pup!

CONGRATS! For your new addition to the family!
I have a toy poodle and I walk him once daily for an hour, it'll be good for your health too...lol
I asked the pet expert at Petsmart and they told me twice a month is good enough but my puppy is very playful and is out in the back yard a lot so I do it four times a month. When you buy the shampoo try to get the one that has moisturizer and shine, it seems to work well on mine.
Good Luck and have fun w/ your puppy...

Be very careful about where and how long you walk your puppy. I recently purchased the Puppies for Dummies book. I discovered I was walking my puppy too long and on the wrong surface for her age. The book is worth the money. It has a lot of great advice and insights.

Absolute minimum twice a day Baths not too often or you will dry out his skin! Only walk him for short walks to begin with!

We have a 1 year old Maltese and we walk him about 30 min a day. We also have two goldens that he plays with and gets rid of his energy. Make sure you about their grooming requirements....if you dont brush the long coat they can get matted very easily...i keep mine shaved...to cute. Good luck with the puppy!

Walk him weekly, feed him 3 X's a day and watch his hairy butt every single day. It's that simple! ... Do not feed him table food, the dog will become obessed!
