I got a new shih tzu puppy 2 weeks ago. She is 4 months old. She will only go outside to the bathroom if I stand out there with her. If I try to walk back inside she runs to the door and stands there until I let her in. At some point I would like to be able just let her outside by herself. Kind of time consuming to stand outside and wait for her everytime she needs to go. How do I get her to go outside by herself?

Maybe she is afraid of being left alone, after all, you just got her two weeks ago and she must think her previous owners abandond her. Try building up her trust in you by being their when she whines for you, giving her lots of affection, and not leaving her alone for long periods of time.

She'll get used to being out there and will eventually go by herself. Right now she is probably a little scared. A little dog in a big world, and you are the only protection she knows.
Just be patient and go with her outside when she needs to go. Try each time to come in without her and eventually she will be ok. Just make sure you give her enough time to go at first, then a few minutes less, then a few minutes less, and so on.

First thing you have to do with a dog is us the same dry food. Dry food is the best because it cleans there teeth and it is not full of water. Until house broke, the dog should only be feed once a day at the same time every day. Walk the dog after you feed it. And I mean walk do not just stand there. Then walk him again a half hour after that. You should walk him as many times a day as you can until house broke. Walking helps it pass the food. Walk it in the same place every day. When they smell there own potty it makes them have to go. When the dog goes in the house, clean it up with vinegar. This does 2 things kills the smell+vinegar has a urine bass smell and the dog thinks you r marking this as your turf. When the dog goes in the house put the potty outside where you want it to go. Remember smelling his potty makes him want to go. So no potty smell in the house but lots of potty smell outside. You should have a pin or create just big enough for him to lie down. Most dog will not potty where they lay. Do not put anything in the pin that will soak up pee. When you are not watching your dog, he should be in the pin. If he goes in the house, you should catch him in the act and grab him and yell no then take him outside. Clean it up and take the potty outside. So to rap this up. Walk him as much as you can tell him good boy when he goes outside. When your not watching him keep him it the pin. When he goes inside tell him bad boy and take him outside..

this is case of anxiety, not urination issues. unfortunatly puppy misses you as soon as you go away.this sounds like a different matter.try crating her for 5 mins..in a familiar room but cannot visually see him/her. dont talk to it around corner etc. return to crate and say nothing do not make a big deal, let it out,and go about what u were doing.next day extent to 8 mins. etc. when puppy can go 15 mins. with NO hissyfit or constant crying. puppy is learning that being quiet makes you come back.then try the peepee training.if this is not the case, try puppy on a lead that is screwed into ground and cannot reach to door, walk him her out a few feet, click on lead and say go peepee,or whatever you command may be,walk away and watch puppy where he/she cannot see you, after possibly crying for a bit, nose instinct will kick in, when you 'catch' the lil one doing its thing, come out the door saying good pee pee or what have you,and come in,puppy associates going peepee makes you return:)

My daddy's dog Jack did that when he was puppy. Daddy just stayed outside with him and as he got older, he stayed outsie by himself. She might just be scared of the dark or something and probably will grow out of the habit as she gets older. Jack is 8 years old now and stays outside. LOL. Don't worry, he a medium size dog. English Springer Spaniel. He aint a small dog that gets sick real easy. Hope my answer helped. :)

Don't rush her. Everything is new to her right now. Stand with her. Getting a new puppy IS time consuming. They require hours of interaction daily. You are your puppy's 'pack' so your presence is important to her. It could take months before she is ready and confident enough to go "without you". When you walk away, she feels like you are abandoning her and she must follow you.
Be patient. It's important for her.

She is not ready to be left outside alone. You need to be there to tell her when she does a good job and praise her. She doesn't understand why you are leaving her! It is scary for puppies. An adult dog will usually go out by itself, but she's not ready for that yet. Be patient and get her properly housebroken for now.

she's still a baby and looks to you for guidance and protection. At her age, she is also not completely housebroken, so its best if you stay out there with her and praise her for pottying outside. Eventually she will get the routine down and be comfortable going outside.

Be patient. She will eventually go out by herself, but for now she is not comfortable enough in her new home and just wants to be with you. You are her pack leader and her mom as far as she is concerned. She doesn't want to be separated from you.
