I have a 1 year old golden retriever, just a few minutes ago he started hacking like something was caught in his throat. He ended up throwing up about 3 or 4 times. I know he doesn't have kennel cough either because he just recently had his bordatella (sp?) shot.

After he gets sick, he tries to eat things off of the floor.

It's 1:30 in the morning so I can't take him to the vet. PLEASE HELP!!!

He may be choking on a hairball. For dogs with long fur, this is actually kind of normal, especially during the shedding season of these hot summer months.
First of all, don't let him eat his throw-up mess. It just gives him puke breath and is really nasty. Just clean it up and make sure he drinks some water in case he ingested something like snail poison or ate poisonous plant leaves.
Try to get him to relax and settled down to sleep. As long as he is breathing easily, and does not seem to have any pain, or is not foaming at the mouth or drooling excessively, he should be okay. If he wakes up with energy and spirit, he'll be okay. If he seems lethargic or uninterested, take him to the vet in the morning.
(You can prevent this in the future by brushing him 2x a day. You can keep his areas free of shedded fur, potentially poisonous plants, and limit his freedom to a confined area for a while so you can monitor what he is eating as he may also have a sensitive stomach. You might want to feed him only dog food and reduce his intake of people food for a while.
Hope this helps!

Goldens have a tendency to eat anything and everything and he may have swallowed something which has stuck in his throat and is trying to get rid of it.

Try and remember if he had anything different to eat yesterday, e.g, a bone which may have splintered as he may have fragments stuck in his throat. or he may have eaten something which has disagreed with him.

Although he has had his shots for Bordatella don't discount this because there are so many strains of Kennel Cough and the shots cannot covr them all. Just keep an eye on him. If he starts coughing and bring up a frothy substance it could well be kennel cough, in which case there is nothing you can do but just let it run its course, which is roughly three weeks. You can give him Benylin Paediatric cough syrup which helps to ease the throat three times per day..

My guess is that he has just eaten something which has lodged in his throat and once he has cleared it he will be fine.
but if the vomiting continues I would starve him for 24 hours and then just give him fish or chicken with rice for two days and then gradually introduce his normal food. Make sure you get plenty of water into him or he could become dehydrated.

If you are in any doubt after you have done all this, my advice would be to take him to the Vet.

Hope all goes well for him.
