As in getting their claws REMOVED, not just trimming them.

I just answered a question about problem scratching and one woman said she should 'get the cat declawed'.

Personally I think this is awful. It is taking away a vital part of the cat. It leaves the cat defenceless.

I think that if you're so bothered about the cat scratching your carpet you shouldn't get a cat in the first place.

What are your opinions?

I am going to be getting a pure bred Ragdoll cat, who will be strictly an indoor cat. Should I get pet insurance? I know some insurance's start at less than 10 dollars a month, but at that cheap will they be worth it if I need them?

Were having a huge problem getting rid of fleas this year. My persian-himalayan has never had a flea problem up until now. We tried advantage, frontline, flea dips, dawn dish soap-NOTHINGS WORKING!!!

The worst part is my son (5) is badly allergic, and he's completly covered in hives from the bites. No one else in the home is being bit~just him.

I bathed the cat a couple days ago, cut his long fur off, and took a flea comb to him. He is now flea free, but our house isnt.

We need advice. Has anyone else suffered this? What did you do? We are to the point of maybe rehoming our cat~but he's been in our family since a kitten with no flea problems. The kids would not appreciate us rehoming their beloved pet.

My cat had a small scratch on her upper back (right about where the scruff of the neck is) a couple of weeks ago but as it healed, she managed to reach. Now it's a large hairless patch ( a few inches wide) with 2 nickel sized open sores that she can scratch with her back paws and can sometimes twist around and lick. I tried a tea tree oil spray designed for hot spots on pets that is supposed to be soothing but didn't appear to be. I also put neosporin on it, which helped but just before it heals she completely scratches the scabs off. It seems not to bother her for a day or two, then she scratches the crap out of it.
Is there an over-the-counter product that I can buy that can keep her from getting at and scratching this spot? Maybe a hydrocortisone spray? At what point should I take her to the vet (which is expensive but will do it if necessary)? (I tend to over panic about pet injuries. When I get to the vet it turns out to be something I can take care of at home, that's why I ask.)

my cat who was 14 got hit by a car two weeks ago,her back leg was ripped off and her front leg broken, jaw was broken and other back leg was broken with possible hip injuries.I had her put to sleep as she was quite old and i couldn't bear to see her suffer. Now with hind sight i am wondering if she could have recovered, obviously her back leg (what was left of it)would have had to be removed. Was it the best thing for her or should i have put her through the trauma of a long and painful recovery,i feel so bad that maybe i should have tried. Please dont tell me i should have kept her in,she hated being inside and had 14 years of happy roaming.

My kittens are 3 weeks old, and one of them has a crusty thing around her eye and we tried to open it and puss came out. She had both eyes open at 4 days old, and then about at 2 weeks old her eye was closed with crust surrounding it. We cleaned it and she re-opened it. But today we tried again and instead puss just came out...and her eye immediatly shut again. We're really worried. Has this happened to anyone else before? Is it just an eye infection that will go away on it's own? Should we continue to clean it? Please help!

My stupid male cat poops right beside the litter box! We have him on special food and medicine, so he cant have a urinary tract problem. He's nuetered, he's 13 pounds, and he's never had a problem with our other cat.... We change the litter box daily, and our other cat has a separate litter box. We haven't changed our litter brand in years. What do I do??

My 18 lbs. adult male cat uses the litter box most of the time. But sometimes, he goes on the rug in the bathroom next to it. We clean the box once a day, and haven't changed the litter brand recently. He shares the box with a younger, 10 lbs. male who is very, very clean (covers up the larger cats messes for him sometimes!!!). Haven't had this problem before. What could be causing him to avoid his litter box?

I want to avoid declawing the new kitty I am getting soon. So far, I have two alternative options coming to mind, but I wanted to ask how well they work. Obviously I don't expect my apartment to surivive kittenhood and beyond unscathed, but I, like any reasonable person, I want to keep damage to a minimum (especially if I can avoid it).

Soft Paws--the little claw covers that you glue on to let them scratch, but not cause damage....how well do these work? Will I have a hard time putting them on? Would a vet put the first set on for me so I know how to do it right? Any disadvantages?

Scratch Post-some people say that cats won't scratch your furniture or whatever if they have a scratch post....but how can you make sure that they know to scratch the POST and not anything else? :-)

I want the cat to be healthy, happy, and well-behaved. I really do not want to declaw, especially if these alternatives work pretty well! If anyone knows of other non-surgical alternatives, please let me know!

I am looking up kittens/cats at adoption agency websites and they are described as having short or medium hair. Is there more to that description than meets the eye?

Before coming to stay with me my kitten and her sister were taken care of by my grandmother. She fed them dry kitten food and a specially formulated Kitten Milk every 3-4 hours. I don't want to keep my kitten on the Kitten Milk but she doesn't seem to be interested in the dry food? How do I "ween" her off the kitten milk to water? Her sister likes both either way.

this man that I room with has read in one book, one book, that leaving food out all day for a cat, shortens their life because it allows their digestive system to always be active..I think it is crap!..

I don't need to be told that I need to take my cat to the vet. I just want to know measures I should take before my visit in the next couple of days.
