For some reason my cat likes being spanked! (gently) Why?

there are glands in that area of their body so that explains why they enjoy it.

My cat likes being patted fairly hard (but not hit!) on the side, like you'd pat a good ol' huntin' dog or something. Coincidentally, he also fetches and comes when called. I guess the patting feels good to him, or at least he likes the attention!

They like it because it is a sensitive area and it feels good to touch, even people like to be touched in there own way!

Mine like to be scratched on the back part of their body also. They will arch their backs for more. It feels good to them.
