Cats - March 2007

My cat is the meaning of a scardy cat. He is always under the bed, so when we leave for work every day I shut the door to my room so he will stay out and play, but everyday when I come home he is in the cupboard, even though I put a jug infront of it to keep him out, he still gets it open. About two weeks ago we got another cat to play with him, and he is still in the cupbaord when I get home. The new cat is just fine and playing when we get home and you would think he would be the scared one because it is a new place. We have had him about 2 years and the new cat about 2 weeks. Please Help? I don't know how to make him come out and play and enjoy life, it is not that scary.

Our two kitties like to jump up on our kitchen counter, and we really don't want them up there. We can't watch them all the time, as we simply don't have the time to do that. So how do we permanently stop them from jumping up on counter? We will NOT get rid of the kitties or throw them out, or give them to someone else, as they are our babies and we love them very much. Adult mature answers would most apperciated. Thank you to all who answer.

Or maybe you have, in which case I think you're awesome.
But it always breaks my heart to go into a shelter and see cats that are 8, 10, 12 years old (or older), and you just know that no one's going to take them. People always go for the young, cute kittens. Going into a shelter and seeing those older animals, knowing the fate most of them have, is awful and unbearable.
I am planning to adopt one more cat in the next year (I have 2 already), and I will definitely get an older cat. I don't care if he/she doesn't have many years left to live. I will give that cat in the last few years of its life love, companionship, and safety.

I have a cat that is constantly throwing up for a couple of days now. I took him to the vet and they did blood work (ill get it back tomorrow) and did and x-ray that turned out fine. My other cat is usually very loving towards him but wont get close to him and hisses at him. Could it be because he is sick? How would she know? Does he smell differently since he isnt well?

Here's the deal. I want to go over to my cousins house and stay over night, but he has horrible fleas, and his parents don't really know it. He has a few cats that live inside and outside and they have fleas. Normally I would just go and stay over (they live about two hours away, so going and coming back at night isn't an option) but I just got a cat, so I'm scared to death that some of the cat fleas might get in my bag or something and come over to my home and infest my cat. Is this possible or am I just overreacting? I love my cousin and I haven't seen him in a long time, and their house is a lot of fun, but I love my cat, and I just don't have the money to deal with some flea infestation. I've dealt with it a bit before and I know it can be absolutely horrible. Please help. If I am really careful and don't put my stuff on the ground, what are the odds that they can still transfer to my home? Please Help Fast!!!

i mean will it hurt him.
he's neutered and almost a year old. he's the only one that has this problem of scratching everywhere... furniture, me, the walls, and everything else he can reach.
or what other alternatives are there? oh and he's and inside cat and always will be... that is if he can stop scratching everything

Our cat is dead, and I suspect my wife of strangling it. Obviously, she denies this, but I know she's always resented the cat. Now, I don't know what to think - what with the cat now mysteriously dead, two hours after my wife saying 'I'm going to strangle that cat'. What should I do? Just put it down to experience and get a new wife/cat?

Our cat had kittens last week.
There is a black girl, a black and white boy and a black boy, so 2 girls, one boys.....
My children are desperate to name the kittens so I need some help.
We have narrowed names down to ......
for a girl.....
ebony.........india.......pepper........marmite........gypsy

for a boy.....
marmite......sooty.....pepper

we would welcome opinions and any other name suggestions, so that the kittens can be named and I can get my sanity back when the children have stopped arguing over what to name the kittens....lol

My cat ashes is 7 years old and over the years she had been needing more and more attention and she gets plenty. She takes over my bed at night and I find my self running into her in my sleep. Does your cat do this?

I taught my male cat to sit on command and he also shakes my hand (like a dog would) for a kitty treat. What types of tricks does your cat do?

i came home from school today and i was the first one home but the dogs were in their cages and the cat was nowhere to be found. we did have my uncle working on our bathroom today and i asked him if he saw my cat but he didn't. my cat is not an outside cat. i looked all over the house but i can't find him the only thing i can think of is he somehow got out. he has never been outside. i looked outside and called him but nothing. i don't know what to do! i really miss him.

Was asked as much by a _potential_ cat owner.

"They have such different personalities..."

(Which I agree with.)

This person really should have a cat, so -- what's a good answer to "What happens if you get a cat you don't like?"

(Mine were both adopted as cats, not kittens, so I'm clueless as to how much personality-moulding can be done on a kitten...)

I have two cats and are both almost two years old. One is long and slender, weighing 12 lbs, and one is small and stubby, weighing 10 lbs. Are they going to get any bigger, or grow more? Also, I've noticed that my female cat has a little bit of flabby extra skin hanging down on her stomach. I noticed it after she got spayed. I know it's not her stomach, because when I feel it, it's just extra skin? Did her getting spayed have anything to do with that?

Are there safe ways to knock out a cat before I take her with me when I move? I don't want her in distress during the trip, first for her sake, and second to spare my car. It will be about a two hour process.

Would I have to take her to the vet and would they let me take her with me under sedation? I would hesitate because this is an adopted stray...and she hasn't been to a vet with me yet. I need to set that up in my new town.

As you can tell I don't want to hurt the cat. Thanks for your help!
