Cats - June 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Cats

My bf and I just moved into a new apartment and it's 850 sq ft. We have a cat that sheds very little and my bf has terrible allergies when it comes to pet dander.

Because of the holiday, we have to watch my moms cat and it sheds quite a bit. His allergies already bothered him before he left this morning for work so I cleaned the house and vacummed the furniture, etc. Im airing the house out, etc. as well. Is there anything else I can do that will help the allergic reaction go down?

I was thinking a forign name. I like Jolie( french for pretty), Bella(french for beautiful) ,and if it's a boy maybe Beau(french for handsome),or Caliente (spanish for hot). The kitten is a calico manx(tailess).

I was told to hold back a little on their food. They do have dry food all the time and water all the time. During the day the three cats share 3 cans of cat food. Should I hold back some of that so they are just a little hungry and go get these mice??

This is not an emergency, his vet said he had a 50-50 chance of making it, and its looking bad - how can I make his last hours the best for him?

I just got a new kitten and already have a 2 year old chihuahua, and they are not getting along well at all, They don't get into rough and tumble fights but everytime my dog gets near her she hisses and crunches up. He(dog) doesn't seem to care about her unless she swats at him then he charges her but they always back off from each other. It's kinda wierd too cause every now and again they get really close to each other and do nothing she(cat) has even let my dog right up to her face once.

Basically the question is how long should I wait to see if they start getting along.

Thanks for all of the answers everyone. They truly helped. I tried to put a towel near momma kitty (Patches) but she didn't want it, so I moved the babies to the cat bed. When I tried to put the cat bed under our bed, it wouldn't fit, so I put it under my vanity (it's one of the old ones that has a place for a chair). I then took a towel and put it in front of the opening so it is darker and she feels more comfortable. Patches doesn't seem to mind it at all. This way, we can walk by without her getting too nervous that we are going to do something. We do check on her a few times during the day and pet her, which she doesn't seem to mind now.

As for our other cat, Calli, I am keeping her outside during the day so I can keep the bedroom door open all day and Patches can come out of the room. At night, I keep the bedroom door closed and Calli stays out of our room.

Now I am wondering how long I should wait to introduce Calli to the babies? Should I wait about a week?

Is there really a spray that will keep cats off of things? Cause we are temporarily in an apartment that we aren't suppose to have pets and my 6 month old kitten won't stay out of the window, off my table (I hate that), or off my counter tops (I really hate that!) Any suggestions other than repetative "NOs" and the squirt bottle? Sometimes I just want to beat him even though I know it isn't his fault he is curious! He is a cat!! Meow!!

There is a heat wave now where I live and my cat is very hot and pants and he is lying down like dead. Should I wet him a little with a spray or a little sponge (I would never bathe him!) to cool down?

My cat Little One has a serious plastic fetish. He'll chew on any type of plastic he can find. He's not eating it (yes, I'm certain), but I find chewed up plastic all around the house. I usually don't bother him when he does this (I find it kind of amusing), but I'd like to know why some cats are so facinated by this.
