I am sorry. Please spend quiet time with your kitty, and do whatever he seems to be up to. If he in severe pain, it may be best to put him to sleep.
I think yo will know if and when that time comes. I do hope he recovers.

I had to do that a few years ago for a dying kitty.
Since the chances are 50/50, don't panic. If there is something your cat likes to lay on, you might consider bringing it to him so he can cuddle a bit, if he's staying at the hospital. Also consider bringing one of his favorite toys. He probably won't feel like playing, but he'll be able to see it at least.
Pet him and talk to him in a calm way- It doesn't really matter what you say. Just let him hear your voice. He will know he is loved.

Be there for him. Let him know he is loved. If it does not hurt or distress him, since you said he was cold provide a warm blanket and your lap for him to sit on.
I suggest if you can consider this, if the vet has said "there is nothing more we can do for him" then perhaps the greatest gift you can give your loved companion is that of having a gentle and painless death. "Putting to sleep" a beloved friend is hard, but if the end is inevitable, the best thing you can do is be there at the end for them. Let you face be the last thing they see, and let your voice telling how much you love them be the last that they hear.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Take some photos while he's still alive & just enjoy your time together. If he's an indoor cat, all should be fine, but watch him when the door is opened because he could get out & die alone & then you have another thing to worry about. I have said goodbye to many cats in my life & the hardest were the ones who got out & died & I found them under the house months later & it was not a pretty sight! I'd say just kick back & watch TV with him until it's time to do something else!

Hold him, love on him, talk to him. Maybe take him - in your arms - out in the yard if he liked to go there. Just don't leave him.
If the vet says he should go to sleep, ask the vet to come to your home so that your baby won't be stressed. My vet did that and it really made it easier.
Good luck. I know how it is to lose your baby. I lost mine a year ago last January. Hey - go to Rainbow Bridges on the Internet. I know you will appreciate it.

I am so sorry for your poor cat. The best is to just love the sweet thing hold it often speak in hushed tones. Try to keep the house cool and dark. Avoid people coming over and so on. I hope all goes OK and stuff weird thing to say now eh? For yourself make sure that you grieve properly it is OK to cry.

Be with him, love him, pet him, comfort him -- make him feel secure, and just be there as much as humanly possible.
Here's the quote I read once in response to having to put an animal down that has sealed itself inside my brain now, and applies to many situations:
"Everything is easier for me if you're with me."
That pretty much sums it up.
Presumeably animals have no fear of death, but in dying the really don't feel well so having their human companions with them makes them feel much better. You treat them as you would any other dear loved one.
I'm sincerely sorry for the situation, and I hope you get the positive 50% chance outcome. If not, I wish the passing to be as gentle as possible.

Oh, I am so sorry!!! We had to put our cat down a few months ago.
There are vets that can come to your house and do it, or you can take your cat in to the vet.
Just hold him and kiss him and tell him that you love him and stay calm, and he will be peaceful too.
Good luck, and my thoughts are with you.
