In northern NJ the two big animal shelters would be Noah's Ark in Ledgewood or St Hubert's in Madison. You can also check with most municipalities that have shelters.
I have a friend who is a vet and he is always looking to place animals with his friends. Sometimes people advertise kittens in the newspaper but even when they are free you'll probably spend more than $50 in vet costs.
There is a lot of sources.

I got a kitten from my local pet store, and I know what people say about buying cats and dogs from pet stores, but I fell in love with her and took a chance. I paid $39 for her and had to get litter box, food, etc. My whole family absolutely loves her, it is the best investment that I could have made, She just makes us all happy. You could also try the humane society if you do not have a pet store around or look in the phone book for an animal shelter. Also keep looking in the classifieds. Good Luck!

This is a free classifieds website that I find really helpful. The link, unless it has been updated, will bring up several kitten ads, and some are free. If it has been updated, go to hoobly.com, pick your city from cities, then pick the pets and animals category, then select the kitten category. Good luck!

Try looking in newspaper ads or on the internet. Or try your local ASPCA shelter cuz thousands of kittens are just dying 2 get out of those cages and find loving homes.

Check the local vet offices.
Here many people put up ads on the bulletin boards at local vetrinarians offices. The vet usually knows someone looking to give away new babies.

Try at a local PetSmart store. Many have weekend adopt-a-kitty events, others have bulletin boards with private owners offering kittens

For that price, your best bet would be getting a kitten from a stray cat or a friend's cat that became preggie, because it's rare you'll find one for that price.

classified section of your newspaper -
everyone's got kittens and nobody wants them, should be 'free to good home'
Don't bother with some damn pedigree cat - cats and dogs alike - animals bred along the same bloodline tend to be inbred
Get a mutt cat (smarter and more personality)

Check on www.petfinder.com and www.craigslist.org . Many people will post ads trying to find new homes for an unexpected litter or cats they can no longer have.
