A two parted question. Interesting.

When the flowers of a red hot poker plant die off, you may cut them at the base of the flower stalk. This will promote more flowering and healthier growth.

As for your cat, its not cruel at all! I think its better to keep him indoors as there are too many things out there that could cause harm to your beloved pet. I keep all mine indoors and they are perfectly happy, and safe!

Not sure about the Red Hot Poker.

It is not cruel to have cats as house cats. You could always build a run, but I don't really agree with these personally.

I think you should either have an Indoor or an outdoor cat.

I have 2 cats and they were indoor cats for about 1 1/2 years but then decided to give them some freedom. I was so nervous too. I had nothing to worry about though! Because they were indoor for so long, they were actually nervous about going out. They are confident know, but very rarely leave the garden. Also they are never outside when we are out shopping or at work, and are always in at night time.

All I can suggest is give it a go and try not to worry, cat's are independent and he will look after himself. Just let him know where he has it good, and where the food is and he will always come home

good luck =^..^=

All cats should be indoor cats. If you let him out and he gets hurt, you have no one to blame but yourself. I hit a cat on the road a few months back and I felt horrible about it and extremely angry at the owner. The cat didn't die but was so badly hurt the cop had to shoot it in front of me.
I hope this answers your question. Be responsible.

Your title confuses me...

Indoor cats do live longer than outdoor ones. It is not precisely cruel to have your cat be an indoor cat. Perhaps you should have several large "cat friendly" non-poisonous" potted plants for him to play with.

Another option is:
If you are not in an apartment and have a yard, construct a "Cat run" for him so he can enjoy the outdoors.

Some good pictures of "Cat runs" people have built:

i suppose it depends if your cat makes a mad dash for the door when you open it. if it wants to go out, let it, it would be cruel not to, but if its not bothered then dont be bothered either. just leave the door open on a nice afternoon and see what happens. it probably wont wander far anyway, mine doesnt leave the front garden.

Wow.. I thought I was the ONLY one who grew those beautiful plants.. I was told by two different nurseries.. that... when the flower part dies or appears to be dead.. you can cut the stalk... That is what I have done for a long time.

i'd try putting a fowl feeder up close to there with some good sunflower seed in it. furnish them something they need extra efficient even as your pokers are in bloom, so per chance they gained't be tempted as a lot to feed from them.

you can leash train your cat. and you can take him outside with a harness and a leash and he can be outside with you that way. That is the only way you should let your cat outside.
