They're just sorting each other out right now. You said the kitten was new, as in "just got", so she's a little freaked out in general right now -- new place, new people, strange critters coming at her -- noisy little thing. Within a couple of weeks, they'll probably be best buds. As soon as the kitten settles in and figures out the dog won't hurt her, she'll calm down -- and she'll soon outgrow the dog! *LOL* She's just scared and threatened so do what you can to make her feel secure, and create a little more supervision in the dog/cat interactions for the time being. If the dog isn't "attacking", they'll end up getting along. If the dog is aggressive, you've got a problem. A kitten, raised with a dog, will love the dog as long as it isn't mean to her -- in fact, it will become HER puppy. As far as how long to wait -- it's just a process that will take as long as it takes, and you have to be patient and vigilant. That's really all it is.
Best of luck to you.

There will be various reason this is going on, yet i'm certain it has no longer something to do with which sex both of your pets are. If I were you i'd get a squirt gun and squirt the cat anytime it attacked the dogs. The cat desires to carry close it really is unacceptable habit. And employing a squirt guns are between the most appropriate options to coach a cat now to not do what's unacceptable.

My big bad border collie and my large calico cat never got along but she had no claws just one helluva punch.,and the dog had girth.I initially kept them seperated by kiddie gate ,and they heckled eachother all day.I got the impression they kept eachother company when we were at work. Then one day we came home to find the cat sitting at the gate with the dog cowering behind her,it was thundering and dog is a scaredy "cat".After that they both roamed free.

I have also had this situation.... Yes, it will take usually a 1 to two week period for the cat and dog to get used to each other... In fact, by the time you read this, the problem might have already been resolved. Good luck !!!

Since the kitten is new, and new to the household, she's probably going to feel intimidated for a bit. They actually seem to be getting along well, for all that they haven't been aquainted that long. Give it another week or two.

If they didn't grow up together, doubtfull they will ever be totally calm around eachother.
I think watching dogs and cats go at it is funny. The cats take it sooo seriously, but the dogs are just having fun.
Plus, you may want to consider playing with them together....on their level.
