Birds - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Birds

We just got a sun conure on the 12th of november, 07, and she's very loving and loves to be held. She loves to chew. The thing is, I haven't really seen her eat any of her pellets. I'm worried we made the mistake of giving her some millet when she came home. She only wants to eat millet. When the branch was gone I took it out and she tried for 15 minutes to get the seeds out from underneath the bars of the bottom of her cage. She's very picky! She won't eat treats, her pellets (she was already on a pellet diet), bananas, apples, or anything else. She took a few nibbles at some corn bread, but other than that I'm just worried she's obsessing over millet. She won't sleep in her hut at night. I'm thinking maybe she won't eat her pellets because they're a different shape than the ones she's used to. These ones are more of a football shaped, but it's all Zupreme (sp?). Also, she acts like she's still a baby. She is only around 4-5 months, the pet store owner had (continued)

I have always been scared of birds -- all animals actually. I have never been attacked by a bird, but I hate pigeons and those grackels or crackels. They hang in packs. I live in Texas now and when the weather gets bad and it's getting ready to rain or storm, the trees are FILLED to capacity with black birds. I mean the branches are weighed down with birds and when cars pass by or honk they fly off into the sky and the sky turns black.

I will literally take an alternate route if I'm walking and there is a bird in my path. I have heard that some will attack you but most won't, but I am still scared. Also, it's not true when people say the bird is scared of you and will fly away. They always stand right in the way when I cross their path.

Eeeewww! They scare the crap out of me. Is this normal?

I was spending some time out on Fisheating Creek in central Florida this weekend and saw a neat little bird. I'm not at all 'bird literate' but I will try and describe it in hopes that someone might be able to tell me what sort of bird he was.

This bird was the size of an American robin or maybe just a little smaller, with a brilliant green coat of feathers save for his bright red head and neck. I spotted him in an oak tree and he seemed very shy. Unfortunately for this discussion (but fortunately for me) there was so much bird life around I was unable to isolate his call...

..any ideas out there on what he might be?

Can someone please explain to me what was going on?

A female sparrow was holding onto the back and neck of a male sparrow very tightly with her beak. He looked like he was trying to get away by hopping around frantically along the ground as he dragged her along.

Another male sparrow was hopping along after them with his wings out, tail down, and head turned up, looked like he was in a begging pose.

Eventually the first male got away from the female and flew away. The 'begging' male hopped towards the female, wings down and all.

She lunged at him and held onto his neck as he fell onto his back and was trying to fight her off. He struggled around and got out of the bite and flew away with her chasing after him.

Uh... so what was that all about? o__O
Can someone explain this behaviour to me, thank you. :)

She does it randomly, and when it happens she does it like 10-20 times. I've had her for 6 years and she's always done it, and when I take her to the vet I always forget to ask. Do I need to be worried?
