I was spending some time out on Fisheating Creek in central Florida this weekend and saw a neat little bird. I'm not at all 'bird literate' but I will try and describe it in hopes that someone might be able to tell me what sort of bird he was.

This bird was the size of an American robin or maybe just a little smaller, with a brilliant green coat of feathers save for his bright red head and neck. I spotted him in an oak tree and he seemed very shy. Unfortunately for this discussion (but fortunately for me) there was so much bird life around I was unable to isolate his call...

..any ideas out there on what he might be?

I know of no bird native to Florida that fits that description. It may be an escaped domestic bird - because of the favorable climate, many escapees from homes, pet shops and zoos can survive quite well in Florida.

Could it have been a Red-headed Parrot Finch? see image: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/birds/finches/RedHeadedParrotFinch.php

actually - better image on this site: http://www.birdhobbyist.com/articles/BirdHobbyist/Species/RHParrotFinches.html

my best guess is a cherry headed conure. It's not indiginous to Florida, but they escape often (conures are curious, and negligent owners leave the door open as they're talking or walking to their car with a load of stuff, or whatever... I actually chased down a mitered conure who's owner thought it would be a good idea to take a stroll through the park with his unclipped, unbound pet on his shoulder. We never got that bird out of the tree... after two days, he disappeared)

Sounds like a Lorikeet.

A monk parakeet that probably got his head stuck in a jar of Smuckers.
