I've been looking at adopting a 6-year-old cat at the SPCA. I've only adopted kittens before (through friends who found stray litters) but am more interested in an older cat this time. I have no other pets right now.

What are some of the down sides to adopting an older cat? The pros for me are that you can already see their personality (unlike a kitten) and also that there are so many adult cats since everyone wants a kitten. (I figure they're only kittens for a few months anyway!)

But, I'd like to hear any cons to adopting an older cat. If you've done this or looked into it, what do you think the issues or problems would be?

Also, he's been living in a foster home for the past few months. Do you think it would be harder adopting him since he may be attached to his current foster mom? Supposedly he's very friendly and just a big, lazy lug.

Thank you! I'm concerned that he may not be happy and have a harder time adjusting than a kitten...

How much does this surgery typically cost?

Since I am up to my ears in debt (cuz my kitten needed surgery) I cant afford training for my 2 year old dachshund and she needs it BADLY. she has a mind of her own and if i tell her no or get in her way of doing something she wants to do she growls. she is also very anti social she'll bark like crazy at random people while im walking her and i literally have to pull her along until the person is completely out of her sight....things like that. DOes anyone have any suggestions for maybe websites or books i can read up on to train her myself??

This may seem a daft question, but I have a tom who is fixated with the remote controls for the TV, etc. If I pick one up he stares at it for ages. If I use the DVD control to open and close the drawer he becomes even more fascinated and will sit and stare at the drawer for hours on end. I don't know whether he sees something humans cannot, or whether the drawer is akin to a mouse nest which cats will,of course, sit morionless in front of for long periods.

On August 18th, i got 2 hairless rats (Jack and Oreo--they're brothers). About 2 weeks later, i got a hooded rex (Shyloh), so that he could keep the hairless ones warm during the cool weather. About a week after that, I noticed that Shyloh was playing a littlle too rough with Jack and Oreo (not like being mean or anything, they were just playing, and Shyloh's claws were scratching the hairless ones skin, very frequently), so i went out and bought Shyloh's cagemate from the petstore (another hooded rex, who is actually Shyloh's brother), so that way whenever Shyloh wanted to play rougher, he could do so with his brother, Tucker. About 2 weeks after that, i fell in love with a brown dumbo rat i saw at the petstore. So i got him, and named him Remy! (He actually had to go back to the petstore 3 days after i got him so that they could treat him for a repiratory infection, and i just got him back last night.)

He died with his teeth gritted, eyes open and diarrea symptons (there was a puddle of it next to his anus). Previous ones included passiveness, he basically avoided to look at me and when he did, God, I wish he hadn't because he had the sadest, most pleading look... And then he looked so thin when I had just fed him a couple hours ago. He remained sitting still with his head down, almost as though he were sleeping standing. He rejected food, turning his head away whenever I tried to give it to him.
He wasn't old, about 10 months of age. He was most of the time in the garden, so I'm aiming towards poisoning because anyone could have access to it if they tried hard enough; he was home alone while I was at work but my neighbours had never let me down before yesterday.
I did try to call my vet but she was out of town and my only choice was to drive 12 hours to the next one, which I couldn't at the time. The next morning he was dead.
Any ideas, please, I'd appreciate it a lot..

I was talking this over with my honey and he doesn't think that we should neuter them because they aren't the ones that would be having the babies, but still I think we should because not only the pet population and how bad it is already out of control but also don't male cats spray their scent or whatever and they would do that in the house too?? Just need some back up! LOL!

Ok I appreciate all ur advice but I need more!!
My dog is not big and not so small she's strong and I can't have her in a room by herself because she will find a way to eat through something and escape I guess I can have her sleep with me at night and let her out and cage her during the day but one problem!! My cat sleeps with me at night what do I do about that now? I could cage him up at night and have the dog sleep with me and in the morning let the cat run free can I? Or is that not fair to my kitty omg I have a huge problem!!!

P.s I really don't trust my dog around anyone not because she's mean but because she's strong and hyper and I don't think anyone can handle her.

to examine his poop to see if the pup has parvo - the test was negative. The vet has taken blood samples to do more tests.
My pup was completed on all his shots last sat (oct 20). My pup threw up 2 times 2 days ago and 2 times today. He has loose stools(2 time today). We did change his treats in the last 2 days, since his sickness, i have stopped giving him treats. We haven't taken him to dog parks, but he has been going to puppy trainning class in petsmart. I am terrified. He seems fairly active, but is tired from the throwing up and lack of full meals. He was perfectly fine yesterday, he threw up on Monday and this morning. The vet has given him meds . I hope this isn't parvo. Has anybody seen such incidents in their puppies?
Please tell me this isn't parvo...please

I know everyone is tired of pit bull questions but i have one. Being an owner of 2 american red nose pits (who are the sweetest things ever) am worried of them getting banned. I know in some cities they already are. But do you think the Michael Vick case could be a final red flag for pit bulls? And another question, if mostly everyone likes pit bulls (according to another question i asked some months ago) why are they still "beasts"?

We have a young cat and she has a re-action to Frontline, being an anti flea treatment commonly used. Help needed to find a herbal preparation, and I understand there is a company called "Deans" in East Sussex, but cannot find it on the web.

I was searching the web for something random and actually came upon a petition to stop the sale of feeder mice at Petco. This petition actually goes into description about how the mice are in for a 'torturous, horrible death' from the snake owner or the snake itself. I want to know everyone's opinion on this, because if people see the food chain as being evil and torturous, then what does that mean for any carnivore?

Do any of you know of any water rescue and water recovery teams in the US with dogs involved in it? I got a call from a firefighter who is in charge of starting one up in Indiana. He knows a lot about the dogs, especially GSD's. We have been talking about drives, ect... My feeling for a dog for this is yes, it does need drives to do the work, but not as much as a hard hitting Schutzhund dog. In my mind, thinking about the tasks for the dog I am thinking something in between a hard Schutzhund dog and a SAR dog. He wants to start with a Shepherd or 2, I would like to convince them on other breeds later as well. Do any of you know of any teams like this? He was into SAR for years, just like a lot in the work, 911 and the Murray building took a toll on him emotionally. I am going to work with this department as much as I can, just wondering if any of you knew of any programs in any departments in the US like this.

my dog recently was on prednisone for skin breakouts. he has some kind of allergies. during the time that he was on the meds, he began waking me up in the middle of the night to go outside. i figured that it was because of the medication. now he has been off of the meds for over a week and he is still waking me up in the middle of the night to go outside. how do i break him of this behavior? we are moving to a new apartment (a highrise) and i do not want him to be doing this there. any suggestions would be helpful! thank you.

During storms my dog gets scared. He shivers. For a few minutes last week during one he sat by me but then he went into the kitchen. I heard him scratch at the door I went in to see what he was up too. Then he went upstairs when he got is open. I sat down he came down when he realized I was down here.
Today he did it again and this time it's a nice sunny day out. I was feeding the cats which is why I have to keep him in when I do that. It was strange for normally he knows I'm outside. He's adult male part chineses sharpay part yellow lab. He's shaggy like a golden retreaver and black so I think he has retreaver Genes. He's about 3 I think.

What is your experience of owning a border collie? Most importantly, do you work and if so, how does your dog cope?

I got my dog spayed on Monday and yesterday when I got her back she acted really sluggish and depressed and I started to think I didn't do the right thing. I know she's most likely sluggish from the medicine they gave her, but I'm worried she'll always look depressed. Besides eliminating the risks of unwanted puppies and ovarian cancer what are the other benefits of spaying?

I was going through some of my contacts' starred questions just now and came across a question posted by the member "oiceyfreeze" regarding removing a tick.

Here is the question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av4OIibpJp7GTD_kM8kQgmzsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071023164305AAyhTrw&show=7#profile-info-e79c946a25d8634e23d75e0657a43f49aa

I was shocked to see how many thumbs up and thumbs down were awarded, shocked at some of the answers given, and shocked at how angry people became.

So, here is MY question: How do YOU remove ticks on your dogs? Does it work? What hasn't worked?

And please, lay off the thumbs people.
