My sister's daughter accidently sat on their 3 year old parakeet..At first they thought the leg was broken. He seemed to have trouble breathing, but was alert. My sister could not get it to the regular Vet. because it was a Sunday. She found someone local and after checking the leg. The Vet said that it looked like it was just the leg cause the bird seemed alert. On the way home the bird died. It was traumatic. We are guessing that it was internal injuries. Has this ever happened to any of you folks out there? My sister felt guilty, but I told her that she did the best that she could do under the circumstances. Needless to say my niece feels very badly as well.

"In a perfect world, animals would be free to live their lives to the fullest: raising their young, enjoying their native environments, and following their natural instincts. However, domesticated dogs and cats cannot survive "free" in our concrete jungles, so we must take as good care of them as possible. People with the time, money, love, and patience to make a lifetime commitment to an animal can make an enormous difference by adopting from shelters or rescuing animals from a perilous life on the street. But it is also important to stop manufacturing "pets," thereby perpetuating a class of animals forced to rely on humans to survive."
-PETA pamphlet, Companion Animals: Pets or Prisoners?

"I don’t use the word "pet." I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer "companion animal." For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance."

-Ingrid Newkirk, PETA vice-president, quoted in The Harper's Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223.

In a nutshell, I'm looking to adopt to my suburb apartment life a very sociable, trainable and sporty adolescent puppy, that could in the future stay alone during normal workhours. The ideal would be a spirited companion.
As a novice in the matter, despite my naturally good attitude I not only spend a lot of time in shelters trying to get a feel of what I'm looking for, but also consult a lot and research breeds. Problem is, I've so far disqualified such wonderful dogs as an Aussie Shepherd mix (would be miserable jobless) and a Saluki mix (can't be trusted in the city and would be miserable always on-leash), but also haven't connected with natural choices such as wolfdog and German Shepherd mixes (and not really sure why). I'm also not fond of pitbulls, for example.

Am I right in thinking this only leaves some herding dogs (i.e. Collie) and Lab mixes? Canaan, perhaps?

Anything I might be overlooking?

Insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My puppy comes in from outside with little red bumps on her belly. She doesn't itch them or lick them, but they are risen red lumps. They bleed and today I looked at her belly again and noticed a small insect biting her. It was not a flea because it had wings. Does anyone have an idea of what this is? She is on flea prevention and has not changed food so I can't imagine it being fleas or a food allergy.

If for some reason a pet comes to your house and you know it's not being well taken care of, would you keep it?
And I mean that you know for sure that it's not being taken care of. For instance, my uncle once kept a dog that went into his yard that belonged to his neighbors because he saw them tie the dog up with metal clothing line around its neck (which led to an ugly infection). He reported the neighbors to the humane society a couple of times.

I have a 6 month old Dachshund puppy. When I am gone at work my boyfriends mom insists on taking her outside. Malibu does not like to go out because its comfortable in the air conditioning. I have asked her not to take her out and she says that my puppy is spoiled. There have been two times when I got home and my Malibu was walking funny and stumbling around. Her eyes look watery. I have put a note on her bedroom door asking to let her sleep. I cant really say much more to my boyfriends mom because I dont want her to get defensive. I am also worried about my little girl. Has anyone had a bad experience with their puppy outside? Is there a certain length of time a puppy should be outside in the hot weather? Maybe I am over reacting?
