I have a 6 month old Dachshund puppy. When I am gone at work my boyfriends mom insists on taking her outside. Malibu does not like to go out because its comfortable in the air conditioning. I have asked her not to take her out and she says that my puppy is spoiled. There have been two times when I got home and my Malibu was walking funny and stumbling around. Her eyes look watery. I have put a note on her bedroom door asking to let her sleep. I cant really say much more to my boyfriends mom because I dont want her to get defensive. I am also worried about my little girl. Has anyone had a bad experience with their puppy outside? Is there a certain length of time a puppy should be outside in the hot weather? Maybe I am over reacting?

Get her to a vet right away. Watery eyes and stumbling around are not normal, especially for a puppy. Your boyfriend's mother should respect your wishes and that you are not spoiling her. Malibu's napping should not be disturbed. She is still a puppy and puppies need a lot of naps. Heatstroke could kill her and it would be your boyfriend's mother's fault. Stand up to her. Do not worry about her getting defensive. Little Malibu is your dog and she is your responsibility. Your boyfriend's mom has no right to do something that you said she should not do with poor Malibu.

You should definitely not leave a puppy outside all day in the hot sun, but dogs are dogs. If your boyfriend's mom insists on keeping him outside, then you need to make a nice, cool shady place for your dog to lay while he's outside. Maybe a kiddy pool to play in. Definitely a big bowl of water. Dogs are like all animals. They can die from heat - puppies are littler, so they can get over-heated and dehydrated faster. But so long as there is a shady place, a big bowl of water, and a way for the dog to cool off, it will be fine.

You don't say where you live, but dogs can definitely suffer from the heat in summer if gets hot where you live. They can dehydrate easily or even die from heat stroke if they don't have a cool shady place to get out of the sun, and puppies especially are vulnerable. If this lady insists on putting your dog out, make sure she has shade and plenty of fresh water. It concerns me that your dog has already exhibited sign of weakness after being outside--if she's stumbling around and has glassy looking eyes, she is one step short of a heat stroke. Can you get her a kiddie pool or a water-filled cooling mat and place it in the shade for her to lie on? They have the cooling mats at most petstores for less than $30.

It also really bothers me that your bf's mother has no respect for you or your property. She is doing something that you specifically asked her not to do. You need to think this situation through very carefully.

It depends on how hot the weather is, if it is really hot you don't want to leave your dog outside for several hours especially if she is not used to going outside for very long amounts of time ,make sure that you leave food and water outside so the dog doesn't get dehydrated, if your dog keeps getting sick i would take her to a vet!! Confront your boyfriends mom and tell her that you would appreciate it if she kept the dog inside. Is there any shady spots in your yard? If not get a dog house. Be sure to tell your boyfriends mom that if the dog does go outside that she needs water, don't worry about telling his mom because you don't want your don't to continually keep getting sick! Do your neighbors spray pesticides around their yard or fence, if so maybe your dog is some how getting into them and getting sick. talk to your vet and your boyfriends mother!
Hope this helped!

A dog left outside MUST have shade and water. If the temps are near 80 and above the dog could dehydrate and die. To leave a dog outside without shade and water constitutes abuse. You need to take action to save your dog. A puppy is even more susceptible to heat.

I have a long-haired Doxie and Yorkie mix. She is outside until the temp. is about 76 degrees. Then I bring her in until it cools down in the evening. Then when it is about 65 degrees I bring her in for the night. It is not safe to have small dogs especially, in the heat. They can't handle it, they can have heat strokes, and die. I would not allow Juliet to be in high heat, no matter who might be watching or caring for her. It would be MY loss, no matter how sorry they were that they did not listen to my instructions. You are Malibu's "mommy" you have to protect her and keep her safe, SHE can't do it.

do you mean going for a walk or leaving her in the backyard? walk is fine, however many dogs die each year because they were left outside in the heat. your puppy doesn't have much fur either so if it is too hot for you it is too hot for the dog.
