Sadly, accidents happen to birds all the time regardless of their being caged or flying free. Your sister could have a necropsy done but what would that prove? That the bird died due to a tragic accident? I sincerely hope that both your niece and your sister can find it in their own hearts to understand that accidents do happen. Even if your sister had been able to get her little friend to a avian vet, the bird probably would have died anyway. Once birds start to bleed they die rather quickly from blood loss.
Best wishes to all.

Parakeets have small bones, the largest-the breastbone covers the internal organs. It sounds like the bird had significant internal injuries. It is extremely difficult to do treatment on a large parrot and impossible to do anything for a parakeet in this situation. I do have a customer whose sister stepped on his Amazon Parrot. It was at the vet for 3 weeks and made it through the injury, but still had to have some special care after he took the bird home. Just a large dog barking near the cage, can kill a parakeet by giving it a heart attack.

I had a similiar situation. I didnt sit on the bird but it got really sick. I worked for an animal hospital at the time. They didnt treat birds but a vet there recommended a woman who did, so we went to her. She sold us about 150 dollars worth of stuff, including a hot water bottle, and some drops she said would make the bird feel better.
Well, I took her home, and tried to give her the medicine, she freaked out and tried to fly out of my hands. She made it about 2 feet, then hit the floor. I scooped her up right away, but it didnt do any good. She squawked a little, bugged her eyes out, and then died, in my hands. It was horrible, seeing her die, and I cried for days, and felt guilty for a long time.
Your niece needs to know that accidents happen and she didnt do it on purpose. She'll feel guilty for a while, its hard not to..Just let her know that the parakeet had a good life with her and she tried her best to help him get better.

Your sister's daughter feels guilty because she believedshe killed the parakeet, well it was an accident and she did everything she possibly could to save it,but i think the vet should have done a better job in examining the parakeet.maybe the vet forgot she sat on it but oh well, condolences to your niece lefty =)

Sometimes accidents happen and you can be the most thoughtful, wonderful pet owner in the world...and something bad can happen...Many pet owners wouldn't have bothered to take their parakeet to the vet...Your sister did..So bravo to your sis and her daughter for stepping up to the plate...My sympathies to your sis and niece, I know they are sad...and it will take a little time..but at least they know they did the very best for their bird...
As far as the injury...could have very well been a spine injury..cant say for sure but thats what it sounds like.

It happens thats why we have the word accident. My sister was playing with her parakeets when she was a teen years ago. She had both in her desk drawer and she went to go open it and one of them flew out. In reaction she closed the draw and broke one of the parakeets leg. She was so upset, he made it, but had a limp for the rest of his life he lived to 11. She had to live years with that guilt. If you want to make your the little girl feel better you can tell her this story but make it like the bird died, or something like that just so she doesnt feel so bad.

Birds have a very high tension nervous system. No matter what the injury to thier body, SHOCK is a real killer and compounds whatever else is wrong. My guess is that your little keet was in shock the whole time and probably lost a lot of body heat and dehydrated somewhat. Their little hearts have trouble dealing with physical injuries.
Pain drains a lot of the already tiny supply of electrolytes in their little body.
Perhaps keeping the bird warm and still could have inproved its survival chances.
I'm sorry for your loss!!

Those little guys can die just from shock and stress. I've seen them die when being handled even for routine things like a wing trim if they are not used to being handled. There wasn't much else you could have done, at least you went to the vet and tried. Internal injuries would be hard to determine on such a little guy.
