Because the people that look at you that way, think only their way is what's best. It doesn't matter that a dog likes to stay outside and prefers to be outside... they could care less about that fact.
As long as your not breaking any laws, the dogs are healthy, and the basics are provided for them including socialization, keep doing what your doing and don't let anyone get to you.

I think it has a lot to do with stereotypes. Having lived in more suburban areas my whole life, it was uncommon to find a home where the owners had outside dogs. If you did run into such a house, the owners were sometimes not well liked by the neighborhood because their dogs barked all night, dug holes and got out, etc. Personally, I prefer having my dogs inside, but that might just be shaped by where I live. If the dogs are well cared for and have adequate shelter, then I don't think it's wrong at all to keep an outside dog. One thing to check with your vet though - as they get older, you may need to consider bringing them in. Just like us, dogs get arthritis, coughs, etc, and I'll bet that it would do an old, sick dog some good to be warm and cozy. Of course, my dog is sleeping on my bed as I type this so I am a bit biased :)

Too many assume outside dogs are mistreated. Even dogs developed for such things - like livestock guardian dogs who live with the flocks. They have food, shelter, care but aren't sleeping on the sofa at night and some people don't agree with that. Being confined and trained and being outside IMO is ok - I have a couple dogs that prefer to be outside and a couple that prefer being inside. They're all cared for and all get attention.

I don't look at people like they are awful if they keep their dogs outside. I just don't understand why anyone would want a dog and not have it live inside as part of the family. I've had as many as 9 dogs (large and small) at one time, and currently have 5, and they all live happily in the house. I train them and they are housebroken and well behaved.

The ironic thing is that a lot of people who have an attitude about outside dogs are the same people who keep their inside dogs in cages 20 hours out of the day. That's what makes no sense to me.

Because outside dogs recieve less attention, Because (depending on where you live) they are exposed to the elements. Most pet owners look at their dogs as family members, would you keep your child outside etc.. You are not an awful person, but do you really think you are being fair to them?? Do you go out and play with them several times a day?? Do they have plenty of food, water, attention etc?? Do they get as much attention as your indoor dog?? Answer these questions to yourself, and if there all yes then nosey people be damned!

Some folks can't comprehend that a dog is a different species ... not a human child. If you kept human children outside, you'd be breaking the law. If you treat a dog as a dog, and not as a child, unknowing people frown on you.
I hate to say it, but in this case, you can't win.

Because dogs belong in the house with their family and that's where they are if they are truly loved. Outside dogs get less attention and are often very sick b4 the owner realizes it. Outside dogs are often not pets they are just lawn ornaments. I have 7 dogs, 2 large breed and 5 toy breed and none want to be outside. I have done rescue for 30 yrs and never had any dog that preferred to be outside all the time. Outside dogs rarely if ever get to go to the dog park or car rides or PetSmart. Outside dogs rarely get flea stuff, baths, or grooming. They rarely get petted as they are just too dirty. The neighbors have an outside dog they "love", she hardly ever gets played with, never gets walked or goes to the park, never gets a bath, never goes to obed or agility school.
She is soo bored she barks all the time. She can not even play with my guys up and down the fence any longer as they moved the fence since she was wearing a track in the lawn.

it can be okay...however most people that keep dogs outside fail to socialize the dogs, interact with them, or even take them for walks. outside dogs need as much if not more interaction as inside dogs, and most people simply fail to provide that time.
there is also the fact that most dog attacks occur when the dog had been an outside dog (although this relates to above with interaction).
oh and the inside dog rules your house...get it some training.

That is why some of your dogs like to be outside because you inside dog tears into them. Why would you want a dog to keep outside? aren't they suppose to be your babies? your best friends? Would you do that to your baby? or leave your best friend outside ? especially in the heat? Some dogs do prefer to be out and that is because they are accustomed to it, but, when they are outside there is a safety issue.. People opening gates, people feeding your dogs poison, your dogs getting out, your dogs are being left unattended which means they can get caught on something, eat something, or even get bit by something. Its just not right.. Would you like to be outside 24hrs a day 7 days a week?
