Well, it could be normal wax but that is not usually itchy. Yeast infections are very common, and produce a brown waxy discharge that has an odor. Bacterial infections are usually painful and the ears are red. Cleaning the ears with a dog ear cleaner that contains acetic acid will keep it clean and dry, but if there is a yeast or bacterial infection present, medication will have to be prescribed by your vet. The vet will do a cytology and look under the microscope to determine what is causing the problem, then pick the correct treatment.
For a good ear cleaning, fill the whole ear up with ear cleaner, massage the base of the ear, let him shake his head, then use your finger and a cotton ball and wipe out any discharge that comes out. Repeat several times. Do this every day or evey other day until the ear is healed. Also, don't forget to use the solution to dry out the ears after bathing and swimming--getting water in the ears is a great way to encourage ear infections.

My dog does that a lot also. We took him to the vet for something else and had his ears looked at, nothing wrong. He'll even scratch until he's crying (at that point we stop him, it breaks my heart). What are you cleaning them with? We have a special solution that has enzymes that bring the deep dirt up and out, and that helps a lot. He may have gotten something in them, and if he scratched until they bled, they will itch again when they are healing. Try to see if he has anything deep in his ears, little bugs (ticks and whatnot) can cause that. It may be an infection, which is more likely if they smell funny. Best bet would be taking him to the vet and having him checked, just in case he needs medicine for them.

This could be a yeast infection. Get a vet to sedate him and scrape and clean his ears properly. My dog had the same problem and the solutions we bought were not cleaning her ears correctly and she was scratching so much that she burst blood vessels under the skin, causing her ear 'flap' to swell up like a balloon within just a few days- really scary. Best to get his ears checked now rather than letting the situation carry on and running up huge vet bills.

Does he have an ear infection, or are they just getting dirty all the time? Certain breeds are more prone to infections than others, and if you're constantly cleaning them out, that could very well be what it is. Does he shake his head a lot to one side, or is it both ears? Do they smell weird? Talk to your vet about a medicine called Triotic, which is a hydrocortisone. That may help with the itching.
It also may be ear mites, so you might want to have them check for those too, they are easily treated with Revolution, but they are easily spread so if you have other animals, check them too!
Good luck!

if they scratch then they are infected, give him 1/3 cup of plain no fat yogurt daily with food to help kill off yeast. then go to a pet store and buy ear drying powder. when you clean them they get wet, when the dog gets hot they get wet and whats the best place for yeast to grow? warm, wet and dark areas!!
