It could be a bad infection like your mom suggested or a serious case of conjunctivitis. I suggest you take your dog immediately to a vet to check him out. Remember that infections tend to get a lot worse if not treated. Also try to avoid any direct contact with the infected eye. If you touched him make sure you washed your hands carefully. Conjunctivitis can be very contagious.

Conjunctivitis, which is a sign of irritation, which could be from a number of things. If both eyes were red it might be allergies, but since it's only one I don't think so. He may have just gotten something in his eye while he slept. But it could be an infection.
Don't get scared, but keep an eye on it (no pun intended) for the next day or so. Take another look to see if you can spot a hair or other foreign object in the eye; if so, remove it *gently* with a tissue. (This will be harder to do than giving him a bath; so get help from your folks in holding him still.) Whether you find anything or not, resist the urge to keep checking on it. Just let the eye rest for a couple of days. If it's still red, or if you notice any swelling or oozing, it's time to at least call the vet.
*WASH YOUR HANDS* before and after with soap and hot water. If it is an infection, you certainly don't want to catch it yourself!

If it was allergies then usually both eyes are red and blood shot. So it is probably and infection or an ulcer. It is best to get your dog to the vet as soon as you can so you can treat the eye. If it really is infected or has an ulcer it will only get worse if left untreated. Good Luck, I hope your parents take your dog to the vet!!

Don't wait to take him to the vet. A red eye with squinting is usually the sign of an ulcer. Ulcers can perforate the cornea and he could lose the eye, depending on how deep it is. The good news is that if you get treatment started right away (usually an oinment to apply several times a day) ulcers usually heal fast. There can be complications, though, especially if he is rubbing at the eye. I wouldn't chance it--he only has 2 eyes!

Take him to the vet. Something (dust, lint, tiny insects like the green ones from trees) might have gotten in there during the night and irritated it. He probably slept and whatever was there got comfy and further irritated his eye. Probably nothing a few drops wont cure.

I would think it could be scratched. Do you have a cat or does the dog go outdoors where some wild animal could've scratched him? You should take him to a vet if you have a way.
