Maintenance & Repairs - January 2007

The neighbor in back of us notified us that our dog was getting into his yard. We blocked the hole, but the fence is in need of repairs and we are not sure that it is OUR responsiblity, since this side of the fence may be their responsiblity (according to some friends). Others tell us as "good neighbors" we should share the cost, but they have seemingly left it all on us. What are the legalities in this situation? The "nice side" of the fence faces our house.

I have a shallow well (about 6 ft) with a jet pump. A couple weeks ago it started short cycling. I went to check the tank pressure and water came out, so I replaced the storage tank. Water no longer comes out and i know i have it at the right pressure (26psi), but that didn't take care of the cycling problem. It seems like the switch is kicking on and off at the right time, but once it kicks off I hear this loud "wooshing sound", and the pressure drops back down to 35psi or so immediately. then if water is still running it will quickly kick back on as it soon reaches 30psi again. it is almost acting like the storage tank isn't even filling up because the pump runs on for about 10 sec, then off for about 4 seconds or so as the "whooshing"sound happens, then it just keeps repeating until the water is turned off. any ideas? maybe a bad foot valve or check valve somewhere? this is my first house with a well system, so it is all new to me. Thanks a bunch!

Can I replace the flush valve with something that creates more pressure during flush, yet uses less water per flush?

I installed a thermal fiberglass blanket on our hot water heater yesterday, trimming it for size and around the access panels with a box cutter. I didn't wear any goggles or face mask. It's not like I was installing insulation in a whole attic or anything, just a 48''x75'' foil-covered sheet.

1. Minor fiberglass inhalation is okay?
2. I got some fibers on my clothes, will they come out in the wash? in the lint filter? or always be there a little bit?

My son-in-law is thinking of working for himself instead of a construction company. What would be the average cost for labor in the Ohio area? He would be doing roof repairs/flooring/painting etc.

I was wondering how you hook up an Air Pressure Gauge to a potato gun's combustion chamber to see how much pressure is built up in the chamber. (that way i can avoid going to high and blowing the gun up). Do i just need to buy one and then screw it into the PVC pipe or is there a certain procedure and adapter that i need to get an accurate reading. i would like to have a gauge i could hook up to a combustion potato gun (preferably) and a pneumatic gun also, so i could use it for testing purposes. i have NO experience in hooking up pressure gauges so please be as detailed as possible. thank you.

I live in the south. Anyone have an idea (per square) what it would cost to: Rip off one single layer of asphault shingles, one layer of wood shingles, re-deck with plywood, and re-roof with asphault?

I am running a cable to the house from the garage for a 200 amp service panel, and have the cable through the conduit, but getting it into the l-body to run it up inside the garage wall is proving impossible, the four wire 4/0 cable just does not want to bend so tightly.

I live in a small home (buillt mid -1950's) in the midwest. I want to replace the ceramic tile currently in kitchen/bath with something that is easier to maintain but that will still look nice. (I don't like the ceramic because its a) white, b) any thing made of glass that falls on the floor is guaranteed to break, and c) I absolutely cannot keep the grout clean, no matter what I do!) I would like the flooring I select to go well with the original hardwoods that are found throughout the rest of the home. I also want to select something that will appeal to buyers in a few years when we sell. The homes in our area sell for around $145K so I want to select flooring that is appropriate for this price range. Any ideas? Thanks!

My house circuit breaker box is full. All breakers are Square D, QO type, and all are 10A. They don't make twin breakers in 10A so I have to jump to another box or replace the box I have. What is the better course to take? All I know about my total amps is I have 25, 10 amp breakers.

I can't get it to go all the way up at once. I have to double tap my open button once it stops and it's been acting up going down too. It goes about half way down and re-opens but the light does not flash. It doesnt seem to hang up on anything and it's always in the same spots. I've adjusted the force and everything but no change. I've even unpuged it and let it sit a while just in case it developed some sort of memory.
