I have a shallow well (about 6 ft) with a jet pump. A couple weeks ago it started short cycling. I went to check the tank pressure and water came out, so I replaced the storage tank. Water no longer comes out and i know i have it at the right pressure (26psi), but that didn't take care of the cycling problem. It seems like the switch is kicking on and off at the right time, but once it kicks off I hear this loud "wooshing sound", and the pressure drops back down to 35psi or so immediately. then if water is still running it will quickly kick back on as it soon reaches 30psi again. it is almost acting like the storage tank isn't even filling up because the pump runs on for about 10 sec, then off for about 4 seconds or so as the "whooshing"sound happens, then it just keeps repeating until the water is turned off. any ideas? maybe a bad foot valve or check valve somewhere? this is my first house with a well system, so it is all new to me. Thanks a bunch!

It's the check valve...there should be one between the pump and the tank. Sometimes they are spring-checks and sometime swing-checks. A spring check can malfunction if something plugs the seat, or the spring breaks. Swing checks are more reliable, generally, because they just use gravity to close a gate to prevent return. Either one can sometimes be taken apart and cleaned/repaired without complete removal from the pipe. Swing checks have to be in the right position or they won't work. Maybe when you did the tank repair work some debris got kicked up, or the swing-check got turned so it's not swinging right.
First step...find it, and wack it a few times with a hammer (percussive maintenance) and that sometimes will fix it.
But it certainly sounds like the check valve.

Well Pump Short Cycling

2 things: check that you installed the Check-Valve in the right direction. "Arrow" should be pointing toward the flow of the water.

Check your "limit" switch, make sure it matches the pressure you have on the tank.
(The one i'm familiar with) Take the cover off, there should be 2 nuts , 1 regulates when the pump comes on,,one regulates when the pump turns off. Both are based on pressure.
Using a Nut Driver, you can adjust those nuts without shutting the pump off. Infact you may start the pump by adjusting those nuts.

may be various issues not adequate airflow, grimy filter out, limit, grimy unit etc., end fooling around beisg decrease priced cooling off the comp. everytime isn't a sturdy thought if u save this up you will ruin the comp so call a HVAC expert out to repair the little situation before it turns right into a substantial one.

It seems to me, for one reason or another, you're well is losing it's prime. So make sure you don't have any leaks anywhere, and go from there. Best of luck to you.
